GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite a pair of goals from senior midfielder Mary Kathryn Macklen, the Wofford College women's soccer team was defeated, 3-2, in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference tournament to No. 2 Furman on Sunday afternoon at Stone Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
The game-winning goal came as the product of a strange series of events. Less than two and a half minutes into the second half, Furman pulled ahead after senior keeper Kara Boggs blocked a shot on goal. Boggs cleared the ball from the back line, rocketing it into the head official who was knocked to the ground. Furman's Stephanie DeVita then scooped up the ball and put it into the back of the net for the go-ahead score.
The Terriers end their 2014 campaign with an overall mark of 7-11-0 and finish with a 3-6-0 record in conference play. Furman outshot Wofford, 27-8, and led with 18 shots on frame to Wofford's two.
Boggs earned a loss despite a career-best tying 15 saves against the Paladins. Boggs' other 15 save game happened the same time last year, when the senior helped the Terriers topple UNCG in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 SoCon tournament.
The game started even between the two sides, with Furman owning the majority of the possession in the first 10 minutes. Boggs was forced to weather a flurry of shots, saving two back to back strikes from Carlie Couch and Jamie Alexander. Boggs deflected the first with a dive to the left side of the net before scooping up the rebounded shot from Alexander.
The Terriers took the lead at the 26:40 mark. Wofford earned a free kick after a Furman defender fouled Wofford midfielder Maureen Buff. Mary Kathryn Macklen took the kick from 28 yards out on the right side of the box, curving the ball into the top left corner past Rose Hull to give Wofford the 1-0 lead.
The Paladins retaliated with just over 16 minutes left in the first half. Furman's break began with a pass from the back line, as Claire Sullivan put the ball through to India Robinson who streaked down the right side of the pitch. Robinson then crossed the ball towards the back post, when Couch flew in to head the ball into the right side of the goal to knot up the game, 1-1.
Macklen stepped up again with 10 minutes left in the first half. Maureen Buff dribbled the ball close to the box, this time attacking from the left side before being tackled to the ground for a free kick from 19 yards out. Macklen took the shot again, finding the top corner of the goal after beating the keeper with a nearly identical score, leading Wofford to a 2-1 lead.
Furman continued to battle back, tying the game in the 40th minute. Furman's DeVita scored her 15th goal of the season on the service from the right side from Robinson, blasting the ball into the center of the goal. The two sides entered the half level, 2-2. DeVita scored again to decide the game eight minutes later.
The Terriers best chance to equalize came at the 72:15 mark, where Macklen nearly scored a hat trick on a third free kick opportunity. The senior blasted the ball from nearly 40 yards out, with the ball plummeting towards the ground, nearly passing Hull before the Furman keeper pounced on the loose ball.
Wofford's season comes to an end with the loss, while the Paladins move on to the semifinal round, where they take on the winner of the Mercer-Western Carolina game in Cullowhee, N.C. on November 7 at 7:30 p.m.
