JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior guard Ashton Fleming exploded on the offensive end in the second half, but her career day was overshadowed by a 83-75 Terrier loss to Florida International on Sunday afternoon.
Fleming scored 18 in the second half alone, playing efficient and smart on the offensive end of the floor. The Kernsville, N.C., native scored a team-best 22 points in the loss to the Golden Panthers – the best scoring performance of her career.
Fleming went 9-of-12 from the floor, nailing both of her attempts from long range. The junior did her part everywhere on the court, whether driving through traffic for a layup or nailing a shot from the top of the key.
The 75 points for Wofford (3-9) was the most the team scored against a Division I opponent all season. Four Terriers ended the game in double-figure scoring. Along with Fleming's 22, classmates Jordan Frazier (6-17 FG, 8-10 FT) and Chanel Stokes (6-14 FG, 2-2 FT) had 20 and 15 points, respectively. Sophomore guard Kentra Washington scored 14 points, going 4-of-12 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 on free throws.
Florida International (2-7) was led by Kiandre'a Pound. Pound had an eventful second half as well, scoring 19 of her 23 points in the final 20 minutes. She went 9-of-18 from the floor while scoring five more points on eight free throw attempts. Pound also grabbed 10 boards for a double-double. Golden Panther Marita Davydova also recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 off the glass.
The game opened with both sides keeping the game close. Frazier spearheaded the Terrier offense in the first 20 minutes with 11 points, while Trynia McKinzie scored eight for the Golden Panthers by working the ball down low and getting to the foul line. The Terriers never led, but kept the game within a few points for the majority of the first half.
The turning point followed a pair of free throws from Frazier that brought the game within two points, Wofford trailing 23-21 with 3:03 left in the half. Over the course of roughly a minute, Nikolina Todorvic, Davydova and Destini Feagin displayed their sharpshooting, knocking down shots from outside the arc to blow open an 11 point lead. Florida International went into the locker rooms up nine, 36-27.
The Golden Panthers led by as many as 14 in the contest. Despite Fleming's second half outburst and key contributions from other Terriers, winning the second half, 41-40, was not enough to overcome the first half deficit.
The Terriers will break for the holiday, returning to the court on January 2. The women's team will ring in the New Year in the Benjamin Johnson Arena, where they will take on the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
