Five Terriers Reach Double Figures as Men's Basketball Routs FNU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Led by a game-high 15 points from junior Justin Gordon, the Wofford men's basketball team earned its most lopsided win of the season, 88-57, over Florida National, Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Five Terriers scored in double figures with Gordon heading the group on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. The junior post player came up just one rebound shy of a double-double and filled up the stat sheet with two assists, a block and a steal. He also slammed down a pair of dunks, the first coming overtop a Florida National defender and sending shockwaves through the crowd.

Senior Lee Skinner and freshman Derrick Brooks had 13 apiece, while junior Spencer Collins finished with a dozen and sophomore Jaylen Allen came in with 10.

Brooks' 13 points were a career-high for the rookie out of Hinesville, Georgia. He added to his day with two rebounds, an assist and an emphatic first career block, rejecting a dunk attempt that energized the arena.

Wofford (7-2) was ahead just 10 at halftime before using a 7-0 run to go up by 20 in the second half. A 17-5 run later on completely put the game out of hand. It was capped with back-to-back dunks from Allen and junior C.J. Neumann, resulting in a 79-47 lead with 4:58 to play.

"I thought our team played well. I was surprised when halftime came and it was just a 10-point margin," said Wofford head coach Mike Young. "A game like this gave us an opportunity to improve on things, but I thought Florida National had some pretty good players.

"I was very impressed with Derrick Brooks. Today, I saw a guy out there that could change gears and affect the game with his athleticism. He played very well and he needed it. I'm proud of him."

Florida National (USCAA Div. I) was headed by 13 points from Quantavis Hall, 12 from Regan O'Rourke and 10 by Aldor Kola. Leading scorer John Hogan (14.4 ppg) was limited to just two points on 1-of-11 from the floor.

The Terriers outshot the Conquistadors 54.1 percent (33-61) to 34.5 percent (19-55), holding the visitors to just 21.4 percent (6-28) in the second half. Wofford finished with a plus-15 rebounding margin (43-28), outscoring FNU 40-16 in the paint. Points off turnovers was another deciding factor, which Wofford led 27-9 with the help of 11 steals to force 19 Conquistador turnovers.

Wofford shared the ball and it showed with 19 assists. Skinner went for a season-high five, while seniors Karl Cochran and John Swinton completed the afternoon with four each.

"I thought we made a couple extra textbook passes and it was really fun to see," Young added.

The Terriers never trailed and took the lead for good on a Collins basket less than two minutes into the game that made the score 4-2.

Wofford scored 10 straight to gain some separation for the first time. Skinner and sophomore Eric Garcia were good for two on consecutive possessions, before Garcia and Collins followed up with a pair of treys that made in 18-6.

A basket by FNU's Terric Harris briefly interrupted the run, but Wofford came right back down the court for more. This time it was Brooks, scoring his first collegiate 3-pointer to cap a 13-2 run with Wofford leading 21-8.

Wofford led by as many as 14 before heading to the locker rooms on top 41-31. Gordon and FNU's Hall led all scorers with 11. Skinner had 10 of his 13 on 4-of-5 shooting.

Wofford scored the first five points of the second half and never led by fewer than 13. Back-to-back Allen 3-pointers made it a 20-point game for the first time with 13:10 on the clock.

The big run started at the 8:57 mark. Skinner grabbed a defensive board and hit a sprinting Brooks with a long pass for a fast break bucket. Brooks was then good for seven of the next 11 Terrier points and the rout was on. Neumann found Allen with a full-court pass for his first dunk and then Neumann capped the 17-5 spurt with a jam of his own as Wofford led by 32.

A basket from freshman Bobby Perez gave Wofford its largest lead of 34 with 10 ticks left.

The Wofford men's basketball team has next week off for exams, before returning to action Sunday, Dec. 14, against North Carolina State. Tip is set for 4:30 p.m. from historic Reynolds Coliseum
