ELON, N.C. – Sophomore Ashton Fleming recorded her third double-double of the season and three Terriers scored in double figures, but Elon used a strong second half to overcome the Wofford women's basketball team, 82-59, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
The Terriers trailed by just five at halftime thanks to a 13-0 run that brought them within a point with two minutes to play. Senior Logan Morris hit a pair of threes during the run, including the triple that made the score 34-33. Elon recovered some before the half to lead 39-34.
The Phoenix scored the first two buckets of the second half to re-extend the lead to nine. Back came the Terriers, responding with an 8-0 run to close the gap to one, once more.
It all unraveled from there. Elon scored 14 straight points over a span of four minutes to go up 15. The Terriers momentarily stopped the bleeding, but the Phoenix remained hot and padded the lead to 20 with 8:34 to play. When it was over, Elon shot 53.6 percent (15-28) in the second half, while Wofford struggled at 25.8 percent, as the Phoenix won their sixth straight at home.
Fleming tied a career-high of 14 points and went for a game-high 12 rebounds. Classmate Jordan Frazier tied for the game-high in scoring with 18 points, and senior Erin Frost scored 10 to round out Wofford's trio of double-figure scorers. Frost was 4-of-4 from the free throw line, remaining perfect this season on all 18 of her attempts.
Senior Logan Morris made her return after missing Monday's game against Chattanooga with an ankle injury. She did not start, but played 25 minutes and scored seven points.
For Elon (13-13, 9-6 SoCon), Kelsey Harris joined Frazier with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, also collecting six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sam Coffer and Lauren Brown went for 13 apiece, while Jennifer Rhodes scored 10 and had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Phoenix outrebounded Wofford (5-20, 3-12 SoCon) 42-34, finishing the game with a 40-8 advantage in the paint of 25-7 advantage in points off turnovers – the Terriers turned it over 21 times, seven more than Elon's 14.
The Wofford women's basketball team plays its final road game of the regular season on Monday, traveling to Greensboro, N.C., to take on UNCG. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
