League Favorite Chattanooga Defeats Women’s Basketball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – League favorite University of Tennessee at Chattanooga defeated the Wofford College women's basketball team, 70-43, Saturday afternoon at the Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Chattanooga (12-3, 1-0 SoCon) came out the gates firing on a 12-2 run and never looked back. Wofford (4-11, 0-1 SoCon) struggled to respond, as the gap opened to 18 before the under-12 media timeout, with Chattanooga leading 23-5.

The sharp shooting Mocs fired off from the field, shooting 66.7 percent in the first 20 minutes, while playing stifling defense, holding the Terriers to 9-of-26 from the field.

Sophomore guard Maria Corella led the Terriers' scoring output, putting up 14 points in the contest. The Summerville, South Carolina native shot 5-of-12 from the floor with four of her field goals coming from deep. Junior guard Ashton Fleming was the only other Wofford player to score double figures, netting 10 in the outing. Fleming grabbed her second double-double of the season, pulling down 14 boards in the game.

For Chattanooga, Ka'Vonne Towns, Alicia Payne and Jasmine Joyner all scored in double figures, combining for 38 of the Mocs' 70 points. Joyner continued to enforce in the paint, rejecting five Terrier shots. Joyner is currently ranked second in the NCAA in blocks.

In the second half, the Mocs started a bit slower, but their defense kept the Terriers from jumping ahead. Fleming scored seven of her 10 points in the second half, but the Terriers couldn't rally from the difficult first half.

Wofford will take the court again on Monday, hosting East Tennessee State in their annual Education Day game. Over 1,800 third to fifth grade students will be in attendance at the Benjamin Johnson Arena as Wofford looks to even their SoCon record at 11:30 a.m.
