GREENVILLE, S.C. – After leading for over half of the game, the Wofford College women's basketball team came two points short of a historic win, dropping a 58-56 decision to the Furman Paladins in Timmons Arena on Monday evening.
The game came down to the wire, as Furman (13-9, 2-4 SoCon) battled back from a 10-point deficit to knot the game up at 54 all with 1:49 remaining. Wofford (5-15, 0-5 SoCon) had the ball, but junior Jordan Frazier missed the layup on the ensuing possession. Brittany Hodges pulled down the ball for the Paladins, dishing it to Whitney Bunn, who scored two of her 20 second half points on a layup to give Furman a 56-54 edge.
The Terriers used nearly the entire shot clock on the next possession. Sophomore guard Kentra Washington had the ball in the right corner with just a second left on the clock, and heaved a highly contested shot up. Despite being bottled up by Hodges, Washington banked the ball in to tie the game for the sixth time.
Furman, after a timeout, had Bunn drive the lane once again. Junior Ashton Fleming fouled her as she drove, and Bunn sunk the two attempts to go a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe on the day.
The Terriers had the final possession and the chance to take the game. Wofford moved the ball around before junior Chanel Stokes drove in the paint to take the final shot with just two seconds remaining. The guards threw up the ball at the baseline contested by Hodges, and it clanked off the rim. Hodges pulled down the board and the Terriers forced a jump ball, but it was too late as Furman maintained possession and inbounds the ball, running out the remaining: 0.4 seconds on the clock.
Furman remains a perfect 23-0 in Greenville all-time against the Terriers.
Wofford's scoring was distributed across eight players with 11 seeing action in the game. Washington led the Terriers' scoring effort with 13 points on 5-of-12 from the field and 2-of-5 from the charity stripe. Ashton Fleming earned her third double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Wofford's bench played a large role in the win, providing 31 points for the team.
For Furman, Whitney Bunn led scoring after an explosive second half. Bunn dropped 23, with a 6-of-13 clip from the floor. Cierra Carter and Holli Wilkins added 13 and 12 respectively.
While she pulled down seven rebounds, the Terriers managed to hold the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year Brittney Hodges to just four points on the night, well below her season average.
Wofford kept the game close by forcing sloppy ball handling from the Paladins. Wofford held a 19-8 edge in turnovers during the 40 minutes.
Wofford will look to take the positives from the game and apply them in their next matchup on Saturday, where they face the Spartans of UNC Greensboro. Both sides will look for their first conference win, with tip set for 4:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. Both the women's game and the men's matchup against Mercer at 7:00 p.m. will be broadcast on ESPN3.
