CHARLESTON, S.C. – The women's soccer team finished out the 2015 regular season at The Citadel Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over the Bulldogs at W.L.I. Field.
The Terriers (5-7-4, 3-4-2 SoCon) scored two goals in each half, dominating the match both offensively and defensively.
Forward
Carlyn Fralick assisted on three of Wofford's four goals, the second most in a single match in program history behind Whitney Steelman's four assists in a 2006 match.
Midfielder
Hayley Younginer opened the scoring for the Terriers at the 13' mark. Fralick crossed a ball into the middle that Younginer was able to receive and nail into the right corner of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Fralick was also involved on the next goal 50 seconds later. The forward this time dished out a pass to fellow forward
Brianna LaFontant, who put her shot into the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
The scoring continued for the Terriers in the second half. Fralick found midfielder
Emily Gaid upfield with a long pass. Gaid then led midfielder
Hannah Washko toward the net with a pass of her own, setting Washko up with a one-on-one against Bulldog goalkeeper Kim Mora. Washko was able to sling her shot past an outstretched Mora into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
Gaid added the final Terrier goal in the 81st minute. The senior hit a line drive shot from the top left of the box past Mora for her first collegiate goal.
Wofford outshot The Citadel (1-18, 0-9 SoCon) in the match 30-3, denying the Bulldogs any shot attempts in the first half. The Terriers also won the corner kick battle, attempting 11 corners while not allowing the Bulldogs any corner attempts.
"We did a good job on both sides of the ball, both offensively and defensively," Head Coach
Amy Kiah said after the match. "We've at times struggled with one or the other, and today we were able to put two full halves together. The Citadel fought hard, they are a great team but we're happy to get the win."
Goalkeepers
Alex Carroll and
Mayson Liner split time in net, with Carroll earning the victory in the match. She played 74 minutes while making one save, and Liner finished out the last 16 minutes in net.
Bulldog keeper Sam Millspaugh took the loss for The Citadel, playing the first half in net while making two saves. Mora played the second half while notching five saves.
The win moves Wofford's all-time series advantage over The Citadel to 12-2-1, including a 5-2 mark while on the road.
Wofford now moves on to postseason play, with the Southern Conference tournament beginning Wednesday.
"The conference tournament is always an exciting time," Coach Kiah said. "Any team can be beaten on any given day. We are looking forward to hosting a home game in the First Round."
The Terriers will host an opening round match in the SoCon Tournament Wednesday, as the team finished the regular season in seventh in the SoCon standings. The team again faces The Citadel, this time at Snyder Field at 7 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
