SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The men's soccer team battled the Furman Paladins to overtime Thursday night on Senior Night at Snyder Field, but the Paladins ultimately came away with a 2-1 sudden death victory.
Â
Midfielder Noah Teplitzky scored the game-winner in the fourth minute of the overtime period. After a scramble in the box, Teplitzky fired a left-footed volley shot into the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season, securing the win for the Paladins (7-5-3, 6-2-1 SoCon).
Â
The Terriers (8-6-2, 3-5-1 SoCon) before the match honored their seniors in defenders
Connor Bauknight,
Connor Davis,
Tanner DeFreitas,
Kevin Hady and
Matthew Tran; midfielders
Nestor Jaramillo and
Will Puckett; and forwards
Connor Copeland and
Joe Marshall.
Â
"They're leaving here as the winningest class in the history of the program, particularly in the Division I era," Head Coach
Ralph Polson said after the match. "It's a great group of guys that have really brought a lot to the program and have helped us continue to move the program forward. They are going to be missed. They have done some amazing things."
Â
The teams played a scoreless first half, but the Terriers opened up the second half scoring. After a failed corner opportunity, midfielder
Jonathan Dean came away with the ball and fed Jaramillo with a leading pass. Jaramillo took two dribbles and fired what looked like an impossible shot from the right side that angled its way into the top left of the net for the goal.
Â
"That's typical Nestor," Head Coach
Ralph Polson said after the match. "He does some amazing things like that and you go 'Wow!' but then you also know that he's been spectacular like that at times throughout his career. You never know when he's going to do something like that."
Â
The goal was Jaramillo's sixth this season and his 22nd of his career, tying him with Alex Hutchins for the most career goals in Wofford's Division I era.
Â
Wofford's lead would be brief though, as the Paladins were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box in the 64th minute. Midfielder Eli Pinner converted the penalty kick, shooting right while Terrier goalkeeper
Joe Wichmann dove the other way.
Â
Jaramillo had another shot on goal that proved to be Wofford's best chance to win the match, but Paladin goalkeeper Sven Lissek was able to save Jaramillo's hard shot to keep the score tied at 1-1.
Â
The Paladins outshot the Terriers in the match 10-9, with each team taking five corner kicks.
Â
"We were playing hard, it was just one of those things," Coach Polson said. "We went to overtime, and that's usually what happens. Ball pops out and we didn't step out quick enough, and it was a great goal. I got no complaints, the boys were playing hard and left everything out there. It's just unfortunate, that's a good team."
Â
The overtime match was only the third time the Terriers and Paladins have played past regulation, doing so previously in 1982 and in 2012. The Terriers won the first overtime match, while the Paladins won in double overtime in 2012 and in tonight's match. Furman also extends its lead in the all-time series over Wofford to 32-12-0.
Â
The loss continues a recent skid for the Terriers, who have gone five straight matches without a win after starting the year 8-2-1.
Â
Wofford closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon, as the team travels up to Lexington, Va., for a match at VMI. That contest is set to start at 2 p.m.
