BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford volleyball team fell in a hard-fought, four-set decision at Samford (25-27, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25) Friday night inside the Pete Hanna Center.Â
Â
The loss snaps Wofford's four-match winning streak. The Terriers entered having won eight of their last 10 and move to 15-13, 6-5 SoCon.Â
Â
Three Terriers reached double figures in the kill column. Redshirt freshmanÂ
Lauren Miller was the leader of the pack, slamming a team-high 12 and hitting .526. Sophomore outsideÂ
Bella Santoro matched Miller's 12 kills (.150) and completed her team-leading 11th double-double with 12 digs. SophomoreÂ
Danni Densford hit .318 with 10 kills. Senior libero
Jessica Graham matched Santoro with a team-high 12 digs.
Â
For Samford (9-11, 4-6 SoCon), Krista Boesing had a match-high 13 kills. Kate Neisler and TJ Russell joined her with 11 and 10, respectively. Morgan St. Germain went for a match-high 13 digs.
Â
The Bulldogs edged Wofford in just about every statistical category. Samford's attack finished the night hitting .254 with 61 kills, while the Terriers hit .218 with 49 kills. Samford also out-blocked Wofford 10-8 and out-dug the Terriers 56-45. Both teams had six service aces to go with seven service errors.
Â
Samford grabbed momentum by coming back to win the opening set. The Terriers used a 6-0 run to go in front 14-13. Samford burned its final timeout of the first frame with Wofford leading 22-19 off a Densford kill, and that's when momentum shifted back in favor of the home team. Taylor Anderton put down a kill that began a 4-0 spurt to put the Bulldogs back in front 23-22. Wofford rallied to earn set point ahead 25-24, but could not finish it off. Boesing saved the set with a kill and Samford scored three straight points to take the set, 27-25.
Â
The Terriers jumped ahead early in the second, leading by a score of 12-8 when the Bulldogs used their first timeout. The stoppage was effective, as Samford quickly gained a 14-13 lead courtesy of a 6-1 run. The Bulldogs remained in front the rest of the way, extending the lead to as many as five before taking a 2-0 lead in the match on one of Erin Bognar's two kills.
Â
Wofford was able to make a match of it. Again, the Terrier jumped in front early, this time scoring the first five points of the set that included a Densford ace and block by freshman
Colleen Reilly. Wofford took a 12-8 lead on an Anderton service error and ballooned the advantage to 17-11 on a kill by Miller. The Bulldogs never got back in it, getting as close as 23-21 before a Santoro kill and Samford error gave the set to the Terriers.
Â
Wofford had come back from two sets down to win twice already this season. However, Samford made sure a third comeback was not in order. The Bulldogs jumped all over the beginning of set four, going in front 5-1 with the help of back-to-back aces by Alana Schouten. Wofford wasn't able to recover, watching the deficit grow to as many as nine points. The Terriers made a set of it late by getting within three at 21-18, but Samford polished off the victory to earn a season series split.
Â
The Terriers return to action tomorrow at noon against league-leading Chattanooga. First serve is set for noon.
