Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match To UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by UNCG on Friday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers took the first set, but the Spartans rallied to take the next three sets for the victory (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 16-25).
 
With the win, the Spartans improve to 21-9 overall and 11-4 in the Southern Conference. Wofford falls to 15-17 overall and 6-9 in league play with one regular season match remaining.
 
In the opening set, the Terriers fell behind early as UNCG led 15-11. Wofford scored the next four points to tie the set at 15-15 when the Spartans called timeout. The Terriers added the next two points for a 17-15 advantage. The Spartans tied the set at 17, and it was also tied at 18 and 19 before the Terriers ran off four straight points to take a 23-19 lead. Wofford won the set 25-22 after a kill by Bella Santoro on set point.
 
The second set was tied at five when the Spartans slowly started to pull away. UNCG had a 22-11 lead before Wofford scored four straight points. The Spartans were able to take the second set 25-15. In the third set, the Terriers were the first to reach ten points with a 10-8 advantage. Wofford continued to hold a one or two point lead until the score was tied at 17. The Spartans scored the next three points for a 20-17 lead and then they put away the set by scoring five of the final eight points.
 
Wofford trailed in the early stages of the fourth set and found themselves down 10-8. The Spartans pushed the advantage 18-14 before going on a 7-2 run to close out the match.
 
Alex Holland led the Terriers with 15 kills and a .419 percentage, along with three service aces. Molly May had a match-high 34 assists, Bella Santoro had 20 digs, and Jessica Graham added 17 digs.

For UNCG, Ashley Muench had 14 kills, while Jasmine Jones, Jessica Brezwyn, and Julia Westerbur all had ten or more kills. Allison Penner had 47 assists, while Katherine Santiago recorded 17 digs. As a team, they had a .303 attack percentage.
 
The Terriers lost both games this season against UNCG in four sets. Wofford closes out the regular season on Saturday against The Citadel for Senior Night at 6:00 p.m.  The 2015 Southern Conference Tournament Championship is scheduled for Nov. 20-22 and will be hosted by Western Carolina at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C.
