SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The women's basketball team scored a season-high 66 points to beat the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 66-54 Saturday afternoon in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
The Terriers (1-5) shot a season-high 43.1 percent from the floor and held the Gamecocks (1-5) to 20 points total in the second half. The win snaps an eight-game losing streak for Wofford that dated back to the end of the 2014-15 season.
Â
"I thought we came out with great defensive intensity," Head Coach
Edgar I. Farmer, Jr. said after the game. "We were really connected on both ends of the floor. I thought our communication was fantastic on the defensive end and we got a chance to get some consecutive stops. I thought the girls played with great energy, and we did a nice job of weathering their runs. The bench did a good job, and I thought everyone contributed. We played great team basketball, on both ends of the floor."
Â
Down 19-18 after the first period, the Terriers came back to take the lead late in the second period. Guard
Amoshia Blakeney hit a jumper in the paint to make it 33-32 Terriers and on the next trip down the floor hit a three to give the home team a four-point lead, a lead Wofford would not relinquish for the duration of the game.
Â
Gamecock forward Rayven Pearson hit a jumper in the paint on the next trip down the floor, and Terrier forward
Kentra Washington hit one of two free throws to make it 37-34 at halftime.
Â
The Terriers came out hot in the second half, starting the third period on a 10-2 run that extended their lead to double digits. Forward
Peyton Walker had two layups, guard
Jordan Frazier hit one of her two threes in the game and guard
Ashton Fleming also had a layup during the Terriers' run.
Â
"That really sparked us," Coach Farmer, Jr. said. "We went in at halftime, and we knew we had to play with that same energy because they wanted to make a run."
Â
Wofford finished the period outscoring Jacksonville State 16-7 to make it a 53-41 Wofford lead. Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth to make the final score.
Â
Wofford outrebounded Jacksonville State 41-33, the second time this season the Terriers outrebounded an opponent. The Terriers also had a season-high 10 steals in the game, with Frazier corralling a team-high five steals.
Â
Fleming finished the game with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Frazier contributed 12 points on 4-11 shooting, but was 2-4 from three and 2-2 at the free throw line.
Â
Blakeney chipped in a career day, notching 11 points on 4-6 shooting and six rebounds, all career-highs.
Â
Guard
Chloe Wanink also scored in double-figures, adding 10 points on 5-8 shooting to go with a career-high five rebounds.
Â
Guard Gretchen Morrison led the Gamecocks with 15 points, going 5-10 from three point range. Guard Kelly Naughton and forward Chloe Long also scored in double-figures, with each chipping in 12 points.
Â
The win moves the Terriers' record at home to 1-1 this season and snaps a three-game home losing streak as well. Wofford is now 1-1 all-time against Jacksonville State.
Â
"We are going to use this as a springboard," Coach Farmer, Jr. said. "We don't have a lot of time to really think about this one because we got another game on Monday, but we understand that if we play like this, we can be very successful."
Â
The Terriers next play Monday, traveling to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on the South Carolina State Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
