Terriers Late Rally Falls Short at CCU

CONWAY, S.C. – The women's basketball team fought back from a 17-point halftime deficit, but the late rally was not enough as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers beat the Terriers 83-69 Monday afternoon at the HTC Center.

The Terriers (4-8) stayed close with the Chanticleers (5-6, 0-2 Big South) through the first period, but Coastal Carolina doubled Wofford's second period scoring output to take a 44-27 lead into halftime.

Wofford forward Kentra Washington started the third period with a layup and the Terriers had momentum early in the second half, as Wofford outscored the Chanticleers in the period 21-15 to make it a 59-48 game.

It was all Terriers to start the fourth period as well. Guard Amoshia Blakeney hit a three and Washington scored a layup on back-to-back possessions to make it a six-point game. Chanticleer guard Rachael Gregory scored the first seven points of the period for the home team, but the Terriers matched her point for point through the first six minutes of the final period.

Terrier guard Jordan Frazier then hit a three pointer with 3:49 to go to cut the lead to five and force Coastal Carolina to use their final timeout. The Terriers however would go the next 2:32 without a point as the Chanticleers bounced out to a double-digit lead that put the game out of reach.

Wofford in the game shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field, better than Coastal Carolina's 43.3 percent (29-67) shooting. The Terriers however struggled from three-point range, going 4-17 from deep, and were outrebounded 44-34 by the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina also benefited from 19 offensive rebounds in the game, scoring 17 second chance points compared to the Terriers' seven second-chance points.

Washington led the Terriers offensively with 17 points to go with five rebounds and one assist while going 6-6 from the charity stripe. Pinholster and guard Maria Corella also scored in double figures, going for 15 and 11 points respectively, while guard Ashton Fleming had a team-high seven rebounds. Pinholster also set a tied her career-high with three blocks in the game.

Chanticleer guard Nicole Isaacs had a game-high 18 points to lead Coastal Carolina, while forward Dionne Parker had 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds.

With the loss, the Terriers losing streak on the road extends to eight games dating back to last season and snaps a three-game overall winning streak. Wofford is now 0-9 against Coastal Carolina all-time and 0-5 on the road against the Chanticleers.

The Terriers have an extended break over the holidays before returning home to face Kennesaw State on January 2 in Benjamin Johnson Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., as the game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team who plays later in the day.
