SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The game was closer than the final score would show, as the Mercer Bears took a victory from the Wofford Terriers, 63-51, on Monday evening in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The game was tight all the way through, knotted up at 47 all at the 6:30 mark. Wofford (7-19, 2-9 SoCon) had tied the game up for the third time, before Mer cer (16-11, 8-3 SoCon) made a 16-4 run over the remaining time to sweep the season series. As was the case for much of the game, Kahlia Lawerence powered the late surge, scoring eight of the final 16 points.
The Terriers made an effort to slow down Precious Bridges and found success in doing so. The three-time SoCon Player of the Month was contested by the Terrier defense on nearly every shot, as Wofford limited her to 4-of-14 shooting on the night for 12 total points.
For Wofford, junior guard Jordan Frazier led the way scoring once again. Frazier shot 8-of-18 from the floor with 3-of-5 hitting from deep, scoring a team-high 21 points. Maria Corella joined Frazier in double-figure scoring with 11 points on an efficient 4-of-8 shooting including one three-pointer. Ashton Fleming led the Terriers' rebounding efforts with seven.
Mercer was led by Lawrence, who scored a game-high 26 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor while only missing one of her 11 free throw attempts. Bridges and Alicia Williams also scored 10-plus, with 12 and 11 respectively. Williams and Teanna Robinson grabbed nine boards a piece.
The game started with Wofford in control, hopping out to a 10-3 run in the first seven minutes. Corella and Frazier knocked down two long-range shots to open things up before Brianna Williams knocked down a deep ball of her own for Mercer. Wofford then scored four straight, as Grayson Pinholster got a put back on an errant shot by Fleming, and Frazier hit a layup to give the Terriers a seven-point advantage.
Wofford built a 20-12 lead before Mercer began to claw back. Lawrence once again powered a run, this time 8-2, making the game 22-20 before Bridges tied the game with two free throws. Mercer pulled ahead by 1, 26-25, headed into the break.
In the second half, Mercer was more dominant, but Wofford kept it close. The Bears never led by more than four until their final, game-winning run.
Wofford will resume play on Saturday, heading to Cullowhee, North Carolina, to face the Western Carolina Catamounts for the second time this season. The Terriers won their last meeting, 59-49, in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
