SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team swept a doubleheader against Iona on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. Wofford scored nine runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 14-4 win in the first game in seven innings. In the second game, the Gaels led 5-4 before a 3-run homer by Conor Clancey in the bottom of the eighth gave Wofford the win.

Wofford is 14-5 on the season, while Iona is 3-13 overall. The Terriers were led by Conor Clancey with five hits and eight RBIs on the day, while James Plaisted added four RBIs. Overall, the Terriers had 28 hits, while the Gaels had 16 in the two games.

In the first game, the Gaels were retired in order in the top of the first. Alec Paradowski led off with a double and Matt Ramsay added a single. A double by James Plaisted scored Paradowski for a 1-0 lead and an RBI single by Kody Ruedisili gave Wofford a 2-0 lead after one inning. Iona opened the second inning with a walk, but the runner was caught stealing second. Two strikeouts ended the top of the second.

Wofford left a runner at third base in the bottom of the second inning. Both teams were retired in order in the third inning. The Gaels had a single in the top of the fourth, but the runner was stranded at second base. Carson Waln led off the bottom of the fourth with a double. With one out, Conor Clancey hit a double to drive in Waln for a 3-0 lead. Clancey moved to third on a ground ball and scored on a single by Derek Hirsch. Hirsch stole second and a two-out single by Alec Paradowski made it a 5-0 game. Wofford left two runners in scoring position after a single by Matt Ramsay.

The Gaels went down in order in the top of the fifth inning. Wofford added a singles from Carson Waln and Kody Ruedisili in the bottom of the fifth. A double by Conor Clancey drove in Waln for a 6-0 lead and a single by Max McDougald pushed the lead to 7-0. A walk to Derek Hirsch loaded the bases with one out and a single by Alec Paradowski through the left side drove in one run. With the bases still loaded, Matt Ramsay was hit by a pitch to plate a run for a 9-0 lead. A double down the left field line by James Plaisted cleared the bases for a 12-0 advantage. Two more singles added a run, while a walk loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Conor Clancey made it a 14-0 game.

In the top of the sixth, Iona led off with a single. A double by Jon Budesa drove in one run. Back-to-back ground outs allowed a second run to score for a 14-2 game. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Gaels led off with a walk and a single. A double play left one runner on base. After a walk, a double by Vinny Demaria plated two runs for a 14-4 score. Matt Pelt made a diving play on a fly ball to right center to end the game.

Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn (4-0) threw six innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out seven batters and walked only one. Merritt Huber allowed one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. In his first career appearance, David Ehman gave up one run on a hit in a third of an inning.

Mariano Rivera (1-3) started for Iona and went 4.1 innings with nine runs allowed on 13 hits. He had six strikeouts and one walk. Jared Finkel threw two-thirds of an inning with four runs allowed on five hits. Alex Fishberg was on the mound for the final inning and had two strikeouts.

In game two, both teams were retired in order in the first inning. The Gaels had a single in the top of the second. Matt Pelt led off the bottom of the second with a double and Conor Clancey singled. With Pelt at third, a sacrifice bunt by Kody Ruedisili scored him for a 1-0 lead. Cody Miller reached on a fielder's choice and Max McDougald was safe at first on a bunt. With Miller at third, the Terriers ran a double steal and Miller was safe at home for a 2-0 lead. Wofford left one runner on base at the end of the second inning.

In the two outs in the top of the third, Iona had runners at second and third after a strikeout-wild pitch and a double. A fly ball ended the scoring chance. The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the third inning and Iona stranded one in the top of the fourth. Wofford went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Gaels opened the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles. With one out, a hit by pitch loaded the bases. An infield single scored one run and a double by Travis Mistretta scored three runs. Mistretta scored on the play as well, advancing on the throw and reaching home on an error, to make it a 5-2 game. The Gaels left two runners on base to end the top half of the fifth.

Wofford led off the bottom of the fifth with a single by Cody Miller, but a double play and fly ball ended the inning. Iona had a double in the top of the sixth with one out, but the runner failed to advance. Alec Paradowski opened the bottom of the sixth with a double and Matt Ramsay singled. A sacrifice bunt by James Plaisted moved the runners into scoring position and with two outs a single through the left side by Conor Clancey drove in both runners to cut the lead to 5-4.

Iona was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning. Carson Waln led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. Waln moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third base. A strikeout and ground ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. The Gaels were retired in order in the top of the eighth.

Matt Ramsay had a single to begin the Wofford side of the eighth inning. With one out, Matt Pelt added a single. Conor Clancey then hit a line drive over the fence in left center to give Wofford a 7-5 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Gaels led off with a bunt single. With two outs and the runner at second, a single to right field by Travis Mistretta scored a run for a 7-6 score. A strikeout ended the game.

Wofford starting pitcher Jordan Accetta went 4.1 innings with five runs allowed on six hits, along with one strikeout. Elliot Lance threw 2.2 innings and did not allow a run on three hits with three strikeouts. Spencer Kulman (4-1) did not allow a hit with two strikeouts in an inning. Will Stillman earned his sixth save of the season with one run allowed on two hits and three strikeouts in the ninth inning.

Bill Maier started for Iona and threw six innings with four runs allowed on seven hits. He had five strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Andrew Camiolo (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. John Daddino went the final two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed on one hit.

The Terriers will conclude the four-game series against Iona with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon at Russell C. King Field.
