SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Terriers had the tying run at third base in the bottom of the ninth, but were defeated 2-1 by the Virginia Military Institute at Russell C. King Field on Sunday afternoon. Wofford won the weekend series 2-1.

Wofford is 20-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Southern Conference, while VMI is 5-10 overall and 1-2 in league play. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for the Terriers. Wofford was held to just six hits on the day, including two by Derek Hirsch. The Terriers left seven runners on base in the game.

The Keydets were retired in order in the top of the first inning and Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom half of the first. VMI went down in order in the second inning. With one out in the bottom of the second, Kody Ruedisili reached on an error and moved to second. Conor Clancey singled to give Wofford runners on the corners and Ruedisili stole home for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, VMI was retired in order. Alec Paradowski drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the third, but was stranded at second base. The Keydets led off the top of the fourth with David Geary reaching on an error. He stole second and moved to third on a single by Tyler Tharp. Geary scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.

Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Keydets led off the fifth with a walk, but the runner was left at third base at the end of the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Derek Hirsch and Alec Paradowski had singles. A ground ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.

VMI was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning. Wofford led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk by James Plaisted. A pair of fielder's choices and a caught stealing ended the sixth inning. Both teams were retired in order in the seventh inning.

In the top of the eighth, Jacob Jaye hit a lead-off single and moved to second on a fielding error. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third. After a strikeout, David Geary walked. A single by Jordan Tarsovich drove in Jaye for a 2-1 lead. Tyler Tharp added a single, but Geary was out at home on the play to end the top of the eighth. Â

Wofford led off the bottom of the eight with a single by Derek Hirsch. With one out, Matt Ramsay singled and moved Hirsch to third base. A strikeout and fly ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. The Keydets were retired in order in the top of the ninth, including a pair of strikeouts.

Carson Waln led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and he advanced to second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.

Wofford starting pitcher Adam Scott (3-1) went 7.2 innings with two runs allowed on two hits. He struck out six batters and walked two. Spencer Kulman threw the final 1.1 innings with two hits allowed and a pair of strikeouts.

Brandon Barbery (2-1) started for VMI and worked 7.1 innings with one unearned run allowed on five hits. He walked a pair of batters and struck out six. Taylor Edens earned his second save of the season by going the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and one hit allowed.

The Terriers will host UNC Asheville on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field. Next weekend Wofford will host N.C. Central for a three game series.
