Baseball Falls 11-6 To Presbyterian College

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 11-6 by Presbyterian College on Wednesday night at Russell C. King Field. The Blue Hose led 5-4 after six innings, but pulled away with three runs each in the seventh and eighth innings. The two teams split the 2015 home-and-home series, with each team winning on the road.
 
Wofford is 9-4 on the season, while Presbyterian is 10-3 overall. The Terriers were led by Carson Waln with three hits and three runs scored, while Max McDougald had a pair of RBI singles in his first career start. Kody Ruedisili added a solo home run. The Blue Hose had 15 hits in the game, with three each from Jay Lizanich and Jacob Midkiff.
 
The Blue Hose were retired in order to start the first inning. With one out in the bottom of the first, Kody Ruedisili crushed a ball over the fence in left field for a 1-0 lead. Presbyterian had a pair of hits in the top of the second inning, but both runners were stranded.
 
Carson Waln walked to lead off the bottom of the second. Matt Pelt singled, which moved Waln to third base. With one out, Max McDougald hit a bunt single to score Pelt for a 2-0 lead. It was the first career hit and first career RBI for McDougald. The Blue Hose had one out in the top of the third when four straight singles plated a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2. Two runners were on base when Jacob Midkiff hit a home run to left field to give Presbyterian a 5-2 lead.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, Wofford left one runner on base. The Blue Hose stranded one in the top of the fourth inning. The Terriers added a pair of singles in the bottom of the fourth, but both were left on base. Both teams were retired in order in the fifth inning and Presbyterian went down in order in the top of the sixth.
 
Wofford led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk to James Plaisted. Carson Waln singled and a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners. A pinch hit single by Pete Carrier drove in the run to cut the lead to 5-3. With runners at second and third, a ground out by Max McDougald plated a run for a 5-4 score. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.
 
The Blue Hose had a pair of singles in the top of the seventh and a balk moved the runners into scoring position. With two outs, a single up the middle by Cam McRae drove in both runners for a 7-4 lead. A walk was followed by a single by Jacob Midkiff to plate another run. At the seventh inning stretch, Presbyterian had an 8-4 lead.
 
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, James Plaisted hit a double. A double down the right field line by Carson Waln drove in Plaisted to make it 8-5. Cody Miller hit a ball that dropped between three Blue Hose players. Waln scored for an 8-6 score and a throwing error advanced Miller to third base. A ground out ended the seventh inning.
 
In the top of the eighth, the Blue Hose had runners at second and third with one out. A wild pitch allowed one run to score. A double by Jay Lizanich drove in a run and Cam McRae reached on an error to plate a third run of the inning. Presbyterian had an 11-6 lead in the middle of the eighth inning.
 
The Terriers left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth after Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch. The Blue Hose were retired in order in the top of the ninth inning. James Plaisted led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but three straight strikeouts ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher John Caskey (0-1) went six innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. He did not issue a walk and had two strikeouts. Connell Anderson worked two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on two hits. Jacob Condra-Bogan gave up a run on two hits in a third of an inning. Josh Simpson gave up one run on a hit. Jordan Accetta allowed a hit and a run in a third of an inning. Will Stillman worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed a run along with a strikeout. Merritt Huber did not allow a hit in the ninth inning.
 
Brian Kehner (1-1) started for Presbyterian and went five innings with four runs allowed on six hits. He had seven strikeouts and walked three batters. Russell Thompson threw two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed. Hayden Deal worked 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Cole Norwood added an inning without a hit and Ethan Wortkoetter gave up one hit in the ninth.
 
The Terriers begin a weekend series with Gardner-Webb on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field. The Saturday game will be played at Gardner-Webb, with the Sunday contest back at Wofford at 2:00 p.m.
