Volleyball Set for Opener at Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – Nearly three weeks of preseason training and preparation comes to an end for the Wofford volleyball team on Friday, when the Terriers open the 2015 campaign against Georgia at 7 p.m. inside UGA's Ramsey Center. The season opener is part of the Benson Hospitality Invitational, with Wofford also slated for Saturday matches against Memphis at 10 a.m., and High Point at 4 p.m.

Friday's opener can be watched on the SEC Network Plus. Wofford's two Saturday matches will not be televised, but fans can follow along with live stats provided by GameTracker.

The Terriers will take the floor for the first time under head coach Lynze Roos. Hired in early July, Roos spent the past nine season as the head coach at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. She led the Fighting Knights to four NCAA Tournaments and four 20-win seasons, including a program-record 24 victories in 2008.

"It will be nice to see a different team on the other side of the net," said Roos, who will also be making her NCAA Div. I head coaching debut. "We've put in a lot of hard work and taken some nice steps forward through the preseason. The team is excited to get out there and see what we can do."

On the court, Wofford is led by its senior class of libero Jessica Graham and middle Liz Buterbaugh. The duo has a combined 183 matches of experience, including 130 starts.

"I think we're all just ready to get the season started and play volleyball," said Graham, who enters the season within striking distance of Wofford's career digs record. "I can't believe my senior year is already here, but I've still got an entire season to play and I'm going to take advantage of it. I think we've got a great team and we're ready to show it on the court."

The only other upperclassman on the roster is junior outside hitter Ellie Tallman. The other 10 Terriers are all underclassmen, including a returning trio of Southern Conference All-Freshman Team selections in middle Danni Densford, setter Molly Mayo and outside hitter Bella Santoro.

The Terriers haven't met any of the teams it will face in this weekend's tournament since 2007, when they fell to Georgia in three sets. That match also took place in the Ramsey Center and is the only other time Wofford and Georgia have squared off. Wofford's only other meeting with Memphis came in 2003, falling 3-0, and its last matchup against High Point came in 2004. High Point leads the all-time series 6-5, which dates back to 1994.

Wofford is coming off a 2014 campaign in which it went 13-22, 4-12 SoCon, finishing eighth in the league standings. The season was highlighted by a win in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Terriers defeated The Citadel in four sets to earn the team's first postseason victory since 2005.
