Etro Gives Women's Soccer First Win of 2015

FLORENCE, S.C. – The women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2015 season Tuesday night, defeating the Francis Marion Patriots on the road 1-0 at Hartzler Field.

Senior midfielder Lucy Etro scored for the Terriers in the 30th minute that proved the difference in the match. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Leftwich crossed the ball from the right side to Etro in the box. From seven yards out, Etro nailed home the goal past Patriot keeper Taylor O'Berry.

The goal was Etro's first of her career, and it was also Leftwich's first career assist.

The other storyline from the match was a strong performance from the Terriers' defense. Wofford only allowed one Patriot shot attempt in the match, a high shot from senior forward Janise Finney in the 37th minute. Wofford also did not allow a corner kick opportunity for the Patriots in the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex King was credited with the victory in her collegiate debut. She started the match in net and played the first half before redshirt freshman Alex Carroll replaced her in net.

Wofford took 23 shots in the match, with 13 of them being on goal. Senior midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode led the team with three shots on goal, while sophomore forward Katie Beuerlein, sophomore midfielder Hannah Washko and senior defender Katherine Whisenhunt each had two shots on goal.

The Terriers also took three corner kicks in the match.

O'Berry suffered the loss in net for the Patriots despite racking up 12 saves in the match.

Wofford improves to 3-1 all-time against Francis Marion and picked up their first victory in at Francis Marion in program history.

The Terriers (1-2-2) take the field again Friday as the team hosts Davidson at Snyder Field. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
