Volleyball Goes 4-0 to Win Gamecock Invite

Terriers extend winning streak to five

CENTRE, Ala. – The Wofford volleyball team completed a 4-0 weekend with three-set sweeps of Alcorn State and Alabama A&M to win the JSU Gamecock Invitational on Saturday at Cherokee Arena.

Wofford (5-3) got the day started at 9 a.m. Central Time with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-13 defeat of Alcorn State (1-7). In the afternoon, the Terriers kept it going with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-21 victory over Alabama A&M (1-6), completing the tournament undefeated and earning their fifth straight win.

"It was a great tournament for us to work on staying in system and controlling our side of the court," said first-year head coach Lynze Roos. "We stuck to the gameplan from start to finish and I saw some good offense from multiple people. It shows we can move the ball around and be less predictable."

There were impressive individual performances all around, but a few stood out in particular. Sophomore setter Molly Mayo averaged 12.15 assists per set through the four matches, quarterbacking the Terrier offense the whole way and topping it off with two double-doubles. Sophomore middle Danni Densford hit an astounding .541 for the tournament, totaling 40 kills, averaging 3.08 kills per set and also coming up with six blocks. Senior libero Jessica Graham led the Terriers on the ground, diving from 59 digs (4.65 digs per set), including a season-high 18 in just three sets against AAMU.

"All three of them played well all weekend," noted Roos at the conclusion of the tournament. "Molly was able to move the ball around, spread the offense and make good decisions. Danni was everywhere. She was fast, kept her speed up and worked extremely hard. Jess and Bella [Santoro] controlled the serve-receive line, which was part of the reason we were so successful. It made everything easier."

The Terriers got the tournament started on Friday, defeating UL-Monroe in the first all-time meeting between the two programs, 3-1, and blanking host Jacksonville State, 3-0.

Wofford returns to action on Friday when it battles Tennessee in its first of three matches at the CofC Invitational in Charleston. The Terriers will then play Jacksonville and host College of Charleston on Saturday.

Terrier Notes:
- Wofford is on a five-match winning streak for the first time since 2012.
- Wofford's match vs. Alcorn State was the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
- Wofford improved to 2-0 all-time vs. Alabama A&M, last meeting the Bulldogs in 2002.

Match 1 Recap: Wofford 3 – Alcorn State 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-13)
Redshirt freshman Lauren Miller blistered a career-high 12 kills, sophomore Danni Densford posted 11 kills on just 13 swings and sophomore setter Molly Mayo registered her third double-double, which added up to a 3-0 sweep for the Wofford volleyball team over Alcorn State on Saturday morning at the Gamecock Invitational.

The win makes it four in a row for Wofford (4-3) and also pushes the Terriers over .500 for the first time in 2015. Meanwhile, Alcorn State dropped its sixth straight to begin the year.

After pulling away late in the first, Wofford came back from 20-15 down to steal the second. Miller sparked the rally with a kill and then went back to serve two straight aces. Wofford tied it up at 21 when senior libero Jessica Graham found a hole in the Alcorn defense. Densford went up for a solo block to put the Terriers in front and senior Liz Buterbaugh finished off the comeback with a kill.

It took the wind right out of Alcorn State's sail. The Terriers dominated the third set, forcing the Braves to hit -.143 for the sweep.

On top of her 12 slams, Miller recorded more career-highs of five aces and 17.5 points. The Terriers outhit the Braves .269 to .122 for the match, thanks in large part to Densford's .846 percentage attack percentage, the highest by any Terrier this season.

Mayo ran the offense with a match-high 33 assists on Wofford's 41 kills. She added 10 digs for her double-double, as well as three blocks and an ace.
