Terriers Cruise to Win over Montreat

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The women's basketball team raced out to an early lead over the Montreat Cavaliers and forced a season-high 33 turnovers on their way to an 83-48 victory Monday night in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers (6-11, 0-3 SoCon) received contributions from all 13 players dressed for the game, and many players set new career highs in the home victory. The Terriers set season-highs with 35 field goals, 19 assists and 21 steals while having 12 different players score a point in their final non-conference game of the season.

"We shared the ball a lot tonight," Head Coach Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said after the game. "That's what we talked about giving up good for great shots. I thought we did a great job of attacking in the second half. We started off slow in the first half, but once we got rolling, I thought we did a great job of making the extra pass, attacking the basket, and getting really high percentage shots."

The Cavaliers (9-9, 5-5 AAC) hung with the Terriers in the first half, scoring the first points of the game and holding the Terriers to 5-19 shooting in the first period.

Wofford gradually built its lead up in the second period. Up 19-17 with 6:03 left, the Terriers went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to go up by 10. The lead at halftime turned out to be 11 after forward Kelsey Lambdin drained a shot from half-court to beat the buzzer, giving Wofford a 37-26 advantage.

The Terriers wore Montreat down over the course of the second half, holding the visitors to eight points in the third period and 30 percent shooting (6-20) in the second half.

Guard Chloe Wanink led the charge for the Terriers, setting new career-highs with 14 points on 6-11 shooting (2-4 from three) and 8 rebounds coming off the bench.

Lambdin and forward Marissa Bayer also had career nights. Lambdin poured in 13 points on 6-10 shooting, her first double-digit scoring game of her career. Bayer set career-highs with five points and eight rebounds.

"I thought [those three] did a fantastic job," Coach Farmer said. "One of the things we talk about is everyone being ready, and I thought they did a great job of being ready to execute the game plan, and I thought they executed it perfectly. I'm very proud and happy for them, and I can see them doing more of this in the future."

Forward Kentra Washington also scored in double figures for the Terriers, chipping in 15 points on 7-14 shooting to go with three rebounds and three steals. Three other Terriers set career-highs, as forward Peyton Walker gathered seven rebounds, forward Grayson Pinholster had three steals and guard Sarah Traynor dished out five assists.

Cavaliers forward Darah DeWalt led Montreat offensively with 18 points on 7-10 shooting while collecting six rebounds. Forward Shannon Jackson gathered a team-high seven rebounds.

Wofford in the game shot 44.3 percent from the floor, making over 50 percent of their shots in both the second and third periods. Montreat was held to 35.3 percent shooting in the game, and they were also outrebounded 45-36.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid both at home and overall for the Terriers. It also moved Wofford's record against Montreat to 12-0 all-time, with 11 of the wins coming in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers go back to Southern Conference play this Wednesday when the team hits the road and faces UNCG. Coach Farmer said his team will be ready for the challenge come Wednesday.

"We have to really make sure we clean up the loose ends," he said. "We're going into a hostile environment. Fleming Gymnasium is a tough place to play, and we understand that we have to start playing our best basketball to come out with a road win."

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Greensboro.
