Terriers Fall in Final Seconds to Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The women's basketball team battled back from a ten-point deficit in the final period to tie the game, but Western Carolina guard Kyia Hough scored a layup with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Catamounts a 74-72 win over the Terriers Monday afternoon in the Ramsey Center.
 
Trailing 63-53 with 8:45 left to play, the Terriers (7-12, 1-4 SoCon) whittled the Catamounts' (5-15, 1-5 SoCon) lead down to two, going on an 8-0 run over the next 2:10 of play, highlighted by forward Kentra Washington converting a three-point play to make it 63-61.
 
A Washington three-pointer with 3:40 left gave the Terriers their first lead since being up 47-46 with 4:35 in the third period. The Catamounts took the lead back on their next trip down however, and extended it to four points with 1:28 to go.
 
Terrier guard Ashton Fleming made a jumper in the lane and then Washington hit two more free throws to tie the game at 72 apiece. Hough missed a jumper on the Catamounts' next possession, giving Wofford the ball with 15.6 seconds and a chance to win.
 
Hough stole the ball from Terrier guard Chanel Stokes though and raced down the floor to convert the game-winning layup. Wofford had one more try to win the game, but Fleming's three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.
 
Washington led the Terriers by scoring a career-high 24 points on 6-14 shooting, going a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. She also tied for a team high with four rebounds to go with three steals and a block.
 
Guard Chloe Wanink also scored in double figures for the Terriers, chipping in 11 points on 5-8 shooting to go with two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
 
Catamount guard Ace Easter set a new career-high as well with 27 points on 10-18 shooting, including 6-11 from three, to lead Western Carolina. Forward Sherae Bonner and Hough also scored in double figures, with Bonner going for 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Hough had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
 
The Terriers shot 40.8 percent (21-52) from the floor and 33.3 percent from three (7-21) in the game. The Catamounts shot 50.8 percent (30-59) and 52.2 percent (9-17) however to best Wofford. Western Carolina also outrebounded Wofford 37-27 in the game, dominating in the paint by outscoring the Terriers 36-16 down low. The Terriers did force 23 Western Carolina turnovers compared to their 18 however, scoring 27 points off Catamount turnovers.
 
The loss moves the Terriers to 13-32 all-time against Western Carolina, and is only the second loss in the last six games against the Catamounts.
 
The Terriers' return home for their next game, hosting the Mercer Bears Thursday at 11:30 a.m. as part of the Terriers' annual Education Day festivities.
