SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team scored late to defeat Furman, 2-1, on Saturday night at Snyder Field in their regular season finale.
Â
The team finishes the season 11-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Terriers' 11 regular season wins marks the 2
nd time in the last three years they have accomplished the feat.
Â
"My hat's off to our guys, because it is always a battle when we play Furman," coach
Ralph Polson said. "I'm proud of our guys, fighting back in the second half. In the end, I feel like we deserved this win."
Â
The Terriers got on the board on
Austin Tuggle's second goal of the season, but Furman quickly answered with an equalizer just minutes later. The game was deadlocked until the 82
nd minute, when
Kyle Nelson converted off a rebound to give Wofford the game winner.
Â
For the second straight game, the Terriers scored first, as Tuggle received a perfect feed from
Connor Donohue and beat the keeper to the far post to put Wofford up, 1-0, in the 23
rd minute. The goal was Tuggle's second of the season, while Donohue picked up his sixth assist of the season, which leads the team.
Â
However, the Paladins responded quickly, on Emery May's third goal of the season. May found the back of the net off a cross from Aigbekan Nosegbe and beat Wofford keeper
Joe Wichmann from just in front of the net.
Â
For the first half, the teams were even with six shots each, with the Terriers owning a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Each team had a great look in the early part of the second half, but goalkeepers Wichmann and Furman's Max Fisher came up with outstanding saves to keep the score tied deep into the second half.
Â
Then, in the 82
nd minute, after a Terrier corner, senior
Charlie Heffron put his foot on a loose ball In the box, causing Fisher to repel it away, where Nelson was waiting to put away the rebound from about 14 yards out.
Â
On his senior night, Heffron delivered his first assist of the season, while Nelson added his fourth goal, good for second on the team.
Â
The Terriers attempted 20 shots, compared to Furman's 12. This is the second straight game in which the team has attempted at least 20 shots.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Joe Wichmann contributed three saves and improved his season record to 7-4.
Â
Prior to the game, Terrier seniors
Matthew Aurednik, Conor Bauknight,
Garrett Closs,
Tanner DeFreitas,
Charlie Heffron,
Alex Thompson,
Nicky Watson, and
Joe Wichmann were honored for their contributions to the program.
