Men's Soccer Falls to Mercer in SoCon Semis

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team fell to Mercer, 2-0, on Thursday night in the SoCon Tournament semifinals in Greensboro.

Mercer's Kobe Perez came off the bench and scored at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half to give the Bears the win, which advances them to the SoCon Championship match on Saturday against no. 1 seeded ETSU.

Neither team was able to find much offense early, as Austin Tuggle's wide shot was the only look the Terriers were able to create in the early stages of the first half. Mercer also had just one shot in the first 18 minutes of action.

In the later stages of the second half, the Bears began to control possession, threatening numerous times. However, Wofford was able to turn away each attempt, with Wichmann coming up with a couple diving saves in the half. Finally, the Bears were able to get on the board on a Kobe Perez header in the 43rd minute, when the Terriers were unable to clear a corner kick.

The Bears added a key insurance goal in the 59th minute. Wichmann came off his line to head away a through ball, but Perez's rebound from 35 yards out was able to find the back of a vacant net and give Mercer a comfortable two goal advantage that held the rest of the way.

Mercer controlled possession after the first 15 minutes, leading the shot count,13-3 , while also earning seven corner kicks, compared to zero for the Terriers. It was the first time all season that Wofford was held without a corner.

The Terriers conclude the 2016 season with a 12-7 overall record. This season marks just the second time in the program's Division I history that they had reached at least 12 wins, with 2009 being the only other time they have accomplished the feat.

"I'm really proud of how hard our guys played all season," head coach Ralph Polson said. "They were a  great group to coach. I also especially want to thank our seniors for what they have meant to this program."
