Volleyball Falls in SoCon Quarterfinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Wofford volleyball team, the No. 5 seed, fell 3-0 against No. 4 Samford on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. The Bulldogs, the ost school, won 25-22, 25-8, and 25-21 to clinch the match. With the loss, Wofford finishes the season 17-15 overall (9-7 SoCon) while Samford (19-13) moves on to face No. 1 seed ETSU in the semifinals on Sunday. The 17 wins in 2016 are the most since 2009 and the nine conference wins tied the school record set in 2001. The 9-7 conference finish is the first time Wofford has finished with a winning record in conference play in program history.

Catie Cronister, The 2016 SoCon Freshman of the Year, recorded her 13th double-double of the season to lead Wofford. Cronister finished with 10 kills and 12 digs. Alex Holland followed with six kills while Kara Shacklette (.300) and Colleen Reilly each finished with five kills. Freshman setter Lorissa King talllied 12 assists and Madeline Savage, also a freshman, had a match-high 13 digs.

Erin Bognar, a SoCon First Team selection, led Samford with a match-high 13 kills as the senior hit .312 on the afternoon. Samford hit .242 in the match while holding Wofford to a hitting percentage of .037. The Bulldogs tallied 11 blocks at the net and Wofford finished with two.

The first set was back and forth with no team ever leading by more than four points. With the Bulldogs leading, the Terriers tied it at 21 apiece but Samford would take four of the next five points to win the opening set. Samford would continue its momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 11-0 lead before Wofford got on the scoreboard. The Terriers would rally but it wasn't enough as Samford won the second set 25-8. The third set, like the first, was close throughout. With the score tied 16-16 Samford rallied off seven of the next 10 points to have set point. With the Bulldogs leading 24-20, freshman M.E. Eberhardt recorded a kill, forcing a Samford timeout. Out of the timeout, Kelsi Hobbs put down a kill to end the match.
