Terriers Outlast Mercer in Five Setter

MACON, Ga. – Catie Cronister set a freshman record with 29 kills in a match as the Wofford volleyball team came away victorious in a back and forth five set nail biter against Mercer on Wednesday night. With the win, the second 3-2 win over Mercer this season, the Terriers improve to 15-13 overall and 7-6 in Southern Conference action. Mercer falls to 12-12 on the season and 4-8 in conference play.

The Terriers took the opening set 25-22 and the Bears took the second set by the same score. The teams would again swap sets as Wofford won the third set 25-23 before falling in the fourth set 26-24. The fifth set would prove to be much of the same, as the teams' swapped points well beyond the 15 point mark with the Terriers ultimately winning 24-22.

Wofford hit .141 as a team in the match and Mercer hit .161.  Freshman Catie Cronister recorded her season leading 12th double-double of the season as the outsider hitter recorded a match high 29 kills and added 22 digs. The native of Chicago hit .184 on the night and improved her season high in kills by five. Her previous high of 24 also came against Mercer on Sept. 24. She is one double-double shy of breaking the top 10 for most in a single season by a Wofford player.

Colleen Reilly was the second Terrier to hit in double figures as the sophomore threw down 14 kills and hit .189 on the night. She also added four block assists at the net. Kara Shacklette finished with a hitting percentage of .444, the highest among all players, as the freshman had nine kills and just one error.

Madeline Savage recorded 24 digs and Bella Santoro and Lorissa King added 18 and 14 respectively.  The 24 digs by Savage were her most since Sept. 9 against Elon (25).  King led the match in assists with 40 and M.E. Eberhardt tallied 24 assists for the Terriers as well.  King's 40 assists were the most in a match since she had 45 against Mercer earlier in the season (Sept. 24).

The Terriers are at home for the next two matches, both conference matches. Friday Wofford plays hosts to Chattanooga (15-10, 8-4) and on Saturday, the last home conference match of the season, Wofford will honor its seniors before a 2 p.m. match against The Citadel (8-20, 1-11).
