Women's Basketball Falls at #19 Florida

OCALA, FLA – The Wofford women's basketball team fell to No. 19 Florida, 74-51, on Wednesday night at Patriot Gym in Ocala, Fla.

The Gators jumped out to a double digit lead early in the 1st quarter and never looked back, leading by at least 10 points for most of the way. However, the Terriers responded in the second half, with Florida only outscoring the Terriers 32-31.

"I'm really proud of our defensive effort, especially in the third quarter," head coach Jimmy Garrity said. "I thought we played with a lot of toughness."

Chloe Wanink was the only Terriers in double figures. The sophomore guard finished with 10 points and two three pointers. Freshman guard Cairo Booker tallied nine points, three assists, and two steals off the bench.

The Gators' Ronni Williams recorded a double-double, finishing with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Eleanna Christinaki added 20 points of her own for Florida, who shot 53.3% from the field overall.

The Gators used their size advantage to score 14 of their 21 1st quarter points in the paint and build an 11 point advantage after the first 10 minutes. The Gators also made life difficult on the Terriers offense, holding them to just 23.5% shooting.

Florida was able to extend its lead early in the 2nd quarter, as they went on a 13-2 run in the first four minutes of the period to build a 22 point lead that they took into the halftime break. The Terriers closed the half strong, with Booker recording a steal and fastbreak layup to get the team to 20 first half points.

The Terriers cut into the deficit with a strong third quarter that saw them outscore the Gators, 19-13. Booker led the team with seven points in the period.

"To hold that team to 13 points and to win the third quarter was really big for us," Garrity said.  "we also won second chance points, which was especially impressive against a team like that."

Despite the loss, Wofford did hold a positive turnover margin for the game, forcing 23 Gator turnovers compared to just 19 of their own.  The Terriers also held a 12-8 advantage in second chance points.

Up next, the Terriers will travel to Durham, N.C. on Saturday, Dec. 3 to face North Carolina Central at 2 p.m.
