Women's Basketball Takes Down North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, FLA – The Wofford women's basketball team returned from an 11 day layoff and rolled past North Florida, 79-60, on Friday afternoon in the Best Western Osprey New Year Classic at UNF Arena.

The Terriers used a big run to start the second quarter to stretch their lead to double digits and never looked back in winning their third straight road game.

Fresh off being named Southern Conference Player of the Week, Chloe Wanink continued her strong play, tying her career high with 26 points, including 18 in the first half. The sophomore guard hit a career best six three pointers and scored at least 20 points for the third straight game. Her six threes were one short of the school record for three pointers in a single game.

Wanink was supported by a host of solid performances from four seniors. Grayson Pinholster and Kentra Washington each produced double-doubles. Pinholster tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Washington added a career high 14 rebounds to go along with a season high 18 points on 7 of 12 from the field. Guard Maria Corella also delivered, scoring a season best 16 points and tying her season high with four three pointers. She also dished out five assists to tie for the team lead. Off the bench, guard Amoshia Blakeney delivered a career high five assists, four of which came in the first quarter.

In the first quarter, the Terriers made a late push to take a 22-14 lead after the first 10 minutes. Blakeney had four of her assists in the period, while Wanink hit three three pointers and led the team with 13 points.

Wofford continued their momentum into the second, as they outscored the Ospreys, 23-12, behind five more points from Wanink. Overall, the Terriers owned a 23-13 rebound advantage in the first half, including seven offensive rebounds. The team also added 12 assists to just three turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Terriers struggled on offense in the third, scoring just 13 points. North Florida rallied to cut their deficit to single digits heading into the fourth. The Ospreys capitalized on seven Wofford turnovers in the quarter.

North Florida continued to put game pressure on the Terriers early in the fourth, cutting the lead to 62-54 with 7:30 to play. Then, Wanink added her career high fifth three pointer and Corella knocked down her fourth on the next possession to lengthen the Wofford lead to 68-54 with just under seven minutes left.  The Terriers continued to play efficiently to close out the game, shooting 67% in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

Once again, the Terriers dominated the rebounding battle, pulling down 10 offensive boards and holding a 38-28 total rebounding advantage. The team also took care of the ball, putting up 18 assists to just 12 turnovers. Wofford's 10 three pointers made is a team high against a Division I opponent this season.

The Terriers have now won three straight road games for the first time since the 1993-94 season, before the program joined the Southern Conference.

Up next, the Terriers will take on Jacksonville tomorrow, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. The game is also part of the Best Western Osprey New Year Classic and will be played at UNF Arena.
