WBB: Terriers Edged by Late Furman Rally

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College women's basketball team battled the Furman Paladins close on the road, but Furman used a 5-0 run in the final minute to win 70-64 Saturday afternoon in Timmons Arena.
 
The Terriers (7-17, 1-9 SoCon) played the Paladins (12-13, 5-5 SoCon) close the entire fourth quarter, never letting the home team get ahead by more than seven points. The Terriers came within one point of tying the game four separate times in the fourth period.
 
Freshman guard Chloe Wanink hit a jumper in the lane to make it 53-52 Paladins with 8:49 to go. Furman guard Kelsey Ellis then hit a layup on a fast break to make it a three point game before Terrier forward Grayson Pinholster connected on a jumper with 7:44 left to make it 55-54.
 
Furman scored the next four points before guard Sarah Traynor drained her second three of the game to make it 58-57 with 7:16 left.
 
The two teams went scoreless over the next two minutes before Terrier forward Kentra Washington and Paladin forward Cierra Carter drew offsetting technical fouls, with Washington receiving a second one and her fifth foul of the game.
 
Furman went on a 7-4 run before Wanink brought the Terriers to within one with 1:30 left to play when she hit her third three of the game to make it 65-64. Furman however scored the final five points of the game it ice it away down the stretch.
 
The Paladins raced out to an early lead, outscoring the Terriers 22-12 in the first period. Wofford however had the advantage in the second period, going on a 10-5 run in the first five minutes of the second period to cut the lead to five. The teams traded baskets the rest of the first half, with Furman holding a 37-30 halftime lead.
 
Wofford started the third period on a 10-3 run and brought the game to a one-point difference when Wanink made a three from the corner to make it 51-50 Paladins heading into the final ten minutes.
 
Four Terriers scored in double figures. Guard Ashton Fleming led the Terriers offensively with 15 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Before exiting the game, Washington had 14 points and six rebounds, her sixth straight game scoring in double figures.
 
Pinholster and Wanink each finished with 13 points to round out the Terriers scoring in double figures. Pinholster led Wofford with seven rebounds, while Wanink went 3-3 from deep in the game to go with five rebounds.
 
Carter led Furman with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Holli Wilkins and guard Whitney Bunn also scored in double figures, chipping in 16 and 13 points respectively.
 
Wofford in the game shot 43.6 percent from the field and 47.4 percent from three while holding the Paladins to 5-19 from three and 41 percent (25-61) overall from the floor. The Terriers also outrebounded Furman 36-33.
 
The Terriers return home next week for their final two home games of 2016 in Benjamin Johnson Arena. Wofford first hosts Western Carolina Thursday at 6 p.m. and then will celebrate Senior Day against UNCG Saturday at 2 p.m.
