Baseball Wins 4-3 At Samford in 10

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford College baseball team won 4-3 in ten innings on Friday night to begin a three-game weekend series against Samford at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Terriers led 3-0 after five innings, but the Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. An RBI double by Carson Waln scored Derek Hirsch for the lead and Will Stillman closed the game out in the bottom of the tenth.
 
Wofford is 17-15 overall and 2-5 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 16-14 overall and 3-4 in league play. The game was the third extra inning contest of the season for the Terriers, who are 2-1 in extra frames. Derek Hirsch led the Terriers with two hits, while Brett Hash had a pair of RBIs. The Bulldogs had 14 hits in the contest, led by Heath Quinn with three.
 
The Terriers opened the game with a walk by Alec Paradowski. Derek Hirsch reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error. A walk with one out to Brett Hash loaded the bases and with two outs a walk to Dylan May scored Paradowski for a 1-0 lead. A fly ball ended the top of the first with three runners stranded. The Bulldogs left two runners on base in the bottom of the first inning.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second, Samford left two runners on base after an error and a single. Both teams left one runner on base in the third inning. Dylan May led off the top of the fourth with a single, but a double play and foul out ended the Wofford half. Samford opened their half of the fourth with a pair of infield singles. With one out, a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position. After a strikeout, a walk loaded the bases. A strikeout looking ended the fourth inning with three runners stranded.
 
Kody Ruedisili had an infield single to begin the fifth inning and he stole second. Derek Hirsch walked and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs, a single to centerfield by Brett Hash scored both runners for a 3-0 lead. Samford was retired in order to end the fifth inning. Max McDougald singled with two outs in the top of the sixth and moved to second on a wild pitch, but was left on base.
 
Samford began the bottom of the sixth with a fielding error and a single. A strikeout and double play ended the sixth inning. Alec Paradowski led off the seventh by being hit by a pitch, but was stranded at second to send the game to the seventh inning stretch. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Samford had a single followed by a double from Heath Quinn for a 3-1 score. A home run to right field by Alex Lee tied the game at 3-3. The Bulldogs left two on base at the end of the seventh.
 
The Terriers struck out in order in the top of the eighth inning. Samford had two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the ninth. The Bulldogs had a single with one out and a ground out moved the runner to second. A sliding catch by McClain Bradley in right field ended the scoring chance and sent the game to extra innings.
 
Derek Hirsch led off the tenth inning with a single to right center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, a double off the wall in left field by Carson Waln drove in Hirsch for a 4-3 lead. Waln moved to third on a wild pitch, but was left on base to end the top half. Samford had a single up the middle with one out from T.J. Dixon. A strikeout and a fly ball to right field ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn went 7.0 innings with three runs allowed on eleven hits. He issued one walk and had seven strikeouts. The seven strikeouts give him 259 for his career as he moves fourth all-time in school history. Will Stillman (2-1) tied a career high by going three innings in the victory. He allowed three hits and struck out four batters.
 
Jared Brasher started for Samford and went five innings with three runs allowed on four hits. He struck out five and walked five batters. Jake Greer threw two innings and allowed one hit with four strikeouts. Wyatt Burns did not allow a hit in two innings with four strikeouts. Josh Rich (1-2) threw the tenth and gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout.
 
Wofford continues the series against Samford at 2:00 p.m. CT on Saturday and at 1:00 p.m. CT on Sunday. A midweek game at Winthrop completes the six-game road swing before returning home to face The Citadel on Friday, April 15.
