Baseball Drops Series Finale To UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-1 by UNCG on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Spartans scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to secure the win and earn a series victory.
 
Wofford is 27-23 overall and 9-9 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 35-14 on the season and 13-5 in league play. The Terriers had eight hits in the game, with two each from Max McDougald and McClain Bradley. Wofford tied a school record by turning four double plays in the game, while the Spartans turned two. Devin Ruiz led the Spartans with a pair of solo home runs, while Ben Spitznagel had four hits.  
 
After a scoreless first inning, Devin Ruiz led off the second inning with a solo home run to give UNCG a 1-0 lead. Wofford had the bases loaded with one out after singles from Max McDougald and McClain Bradley, along with a walk to Mack Nathanson. A double play ended the scoring chance for the Terriers in the second inning.
 
The Spartans loaded the bases in the top of the third on two walks and a single. After a strikeout, a sacrifice fly plated a run. A strikeout ended the top half with two runners stranded and UNCG holding a 2-0 advantage. The Terriers were retired in order to end the third inning. The Spartans had a runner picked off first to end the top half of the fourth inning and Wofford went down in order to end the fourth.
 
In the fifth inning, both teams turned double plays. The Spartans had one runner on in the top of the sixth, when the third double play of the game turned by the Terriers ended the top half. Wofford left one runner on base at the end of the sixth inning. UNCG led off the seventh with a walk, but a double play and fly ball ended the top half. Max McDougald singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Mack Nathanson added a single with one out. A pair of strikeout ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.
 
UNCG had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the eighth after a pair of singles. A fly ball sent the game to the bottom of the eighth. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Brett Hash singled and an RBI double by Dylan May made it a 2-1 game. A ground out ended the eighth inning.
 
Devin Ruiz opened the ninth inning with a solo home run to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. With one out, UNCG added a single and a runner reached on a walk with two outs. An RBI single added a run and was followed by a walk. Another two-out single plated two runs as the Spartans took a 6-1 lead. McClain Bradley led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but was unable to advance.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Adam Scott (3-5) went 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits, plus four strikeouts. Elliot Lance worked 4.2 scoreless innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Will Stillman threw two innings and gave up four runs on six hits while striking out four.
 
Keaton Haack (4-2) started for UNCG and did not allow a run in five innings on three hits, along with two strikeouts. Chad Sykes gave up one run on four hits in 2.2 innings and had two strikeouts. Andrew Wantz earned his third save of the season by going the final 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
After taking the week off for exams, Wofford will return to the field on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. against East Tennessee State to begin the final home series of the season.
