Men's Soccer Falls in SoCon Opener

MACON, GA. – The Wofford men's soccer team fell to Mercer, 2-0, in their Southern Conference opener in Macon on Tuesday night.

The Bears scored in the opening minute and added a second goal midway through the first half to extend its lead and force the Terriers to chase the game the rest of the way. From there, Mercer relied on a stifling defense to hold Wofford scoreless for just the second time this season.

Mercer struck for the opening goal in just 26 seconds, with Roberto Arteaga assisting Will Bagrou to help the Bears jump out front early. For Bagrou, it was his fifth goal of the season.

The Bears added another goal in the 19th minute off a corner kick from Trenton Whitely that was headed into the top right corner of the net by Conner Antley to give Mercer a 2-0 lead that stood the rest of the way.

After the Terriers fell behind by two goals early, Mercer was able to set its defense and allow Wofford just one shot attempt for the game.

On the Wofford side, goalkeeper Joe Wichmann delivered a save, while the team added two more in the loss. The Terriers' best chance to rally was in the closing minutes of the first half, when they earned back to back corner kicks. However, the Bears cleared both chances, keeping Wofford off the scoreboard.

Freshman forward Sam Ross attempted the Terriers' lone shot for the contest.

Up next, the Terriers will return home to take on VMI on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m.
