Men's Soccer Rolls to Win Over VMI

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team scored three goals in each half and cruised to a 6-1 victory over VMI on Saturday afternoon at Snyder Field.

The Terriers' six goals were all scored by different players, including two who notched their first of the year.

After a somewhat slow start, Wofford broke through midway through the first half, when VMI committed a handball in the box, which led to a Nicky Watson penalty kick. Watson buried the kick, making the Terriers three out of three this year on penalty kick opportunities. For Watson, it was his second goal of the year and his first since netting the game winner in double overtime in the season opener at Presbyterian (8/26).

The Terriers proceeded to add two more goals just before the half to build a comfortable lead at the break. First, Sam Ross rebounded a shot after Jack Sicker's initial shot was saved by VMI goalkeeper Robert Allen. With Allen out of position, Ross easily found the back of the net from about eight yards out. Ross, a freshman, has now scored goals in consecutive home games, after scoring his first career goal in a 3-1 win over USC Upstate (9/20).

In the 44th minute, Robin Hupin, who had subbed in off the bench, found a short cross from Nash Wagnon and finished from about 10 yards out for his first goal of the season. It was also Wagnon's first assist on the year.

The Keydets responded with the first goal in the second half, when Sam Moffatt rebounded a blocked shot to put VMI on the board in the 61st minute.

However, from there, it was all Terriers. Matthew Aurednik scored on a breakaway in the 66th minute to put Wofford back up by three goals. Aurednik now leads the team with four goals on the season.

With a big lead late, senior forward Charlie Heffron added a goal on an assist from Connor Donohue that gave the Terriers a 5-1 lead. It was also Heffron's first goal since the opener at Presbyterian (8/26). Donohue recorded his team leading third assist on the play.

Wofford saved the most impressive goal of the day for last, as freshman Austin Tuggle scored his first career goal on a beautifully struck shot from at least 25 yards. The shot sailed just past the outstretched arms of the keeper and into the top right corner of the net.

On the afternoon, the Terriers attempted a season high 24 shots, while the Keydets added 11. Wofford also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Defensively, goalkeeper Joe Wichmann added four critical saves in the first half, while the game was still in doubt.

Up next, Wofford will play host to ETSU this Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
