Men's Soccer earns victory over ETSU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team broke a scoreless tie early in the second half and held on late to defeat ETSU, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Snyder Field.

After leading goal scorer Matthew Aurednik left the game early in the second half with an injury, the underclassmen stepped up and connected on the only goal of the game. In the 55th minute, Connor Donohue split two defenders and fed a short pass up the sideline to freshman Sam Ross, who delivered a perfect cross from the corner to fellow freshman Lucas Altman, whose header beat the keeper left to put the Terriers on the board first and give them lead they held the rest of the way.

"I thought it was our most complete game," head coach Ralph Polson said. "We came out early on and had opportunities. Our leading goal scorer goes out and we turned to the young guys and they delivered."

While he scored in the second half, Altman nearly put the Terriers on the board in the opening minute, but his shot deflected off of the post and out of harm's way for ETSU.

In the first half, Wofford mostly controlled possession, outshooting the Buccaneers, 8-6. Defensively, the Terriers defended soundly against three ETSU corner kicks.

Just 10 minutes into the final period, Altman's first career goal was the difference in the game. It was also Ross's second straight game with an assist, while Donohue added his team leading fourth assist on the year.

After gaining the 1-0 lead, the Terriers held on the rest of the way, thanks to two outstanding saves by senior goalkeeper Joe Wichmann, the second of which came with just under four minutes remaining.

It was Wichmann's first shutout on the season.

"Joe Wichmann was as good as he's ever been tonight," Polson said. "Two great saves, his leadership in the back, helping organize our back line were huge for us."

Offensively, Altman and Kyle Nelson tied for the team lead with three shot attempts, while Donohue added two.

The Terriers earned the victory despite the Buccaneers holding a 13-12 shot advantage and a 7-2 corner kick advantage.

With the win, Wofford improves to 2-1 in Southern Conference play.

Up next, the Terriers will make the short trip to Furman this Saturday, Oct. 8. The game will kick at 7 p.m.
