GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team scored twice in the final 10 minutes to defeat Furman, 3-2, on Saturday night in Greenville.
Despite falling behind twice in the contest, the Terriers were able to equalize both times, before
Lucas Altman headed in the game winner in the 86
th minute to give Wofford its second three game winning streak of the season.
"What is most impressive about this team, is its will to win," head coach
Ralph Polson said. "To be able to equalize twice, it really shows the heart that this team has."
For the second straight conference road game, the Terriers fell behind in the early minutes. This time, just four minutes in, the Paladins' Marco Ortiz scored from in close off a set piece to put Wofford behind, 1-0. Although Furman controlled possession for most of the first half, the Terriers did end the period with a 4-2 shot advantage and a 4-1 lead in corners.
Already trailing by a goal, the Paladins had a great look in the opening minute of the second half. However, Terrier goalkeeper
Joe Wichmann came up with an outstanding diving save to keep the deficit at just one goal.
The Terriers took control of the game in the second, creating numerous opportunities to tie the score. In the 71
st minute, they finally capitalized, as Altman was fouled just outside the box, which drew a free kick from about 22 yards that
Kevin Davidsson curled into the top left corner of the net. It was Davidsson's first goal of the season and his first goal as a Wofford Terrier.
With the game tied at 1-1, Furman drew a foul off a corner kick and earned a penalty kick. The Paladins' Lewis Hawke converted the chance to give Furman a 2-1 lead with under nine minutes to play.
The Terriers responded almost immediately.
Kyle Nelson's shot hit the post and was rebounded in by Altman to tie the game at 2-2 in the 84
th minute. Then, just two minutes later, Altman struck again, this time from six yards out, as he headed in a perfectly placed corner from Davidsson for the game winner.
"As soon as we were able to equalize the second time, I felt confident that the game would turn out in our favor," Polson said. "It was a complete team effort."
With the Terriers on their second three game winning streak of the season, this marks the first time they have accomplished the feat since 2013.
Altman's two goal, four point night are both team highs for the season. The freshman from Johnson City, Tenn. Has also scored game winners in consecutive games, with his second half header proving the difference against ETSU earlier this week.
Up next, Wofford will return home to face UNCG on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. The team will be looking for its first four game winning streak since 2013.
