SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team fell to UNCG, 2-1, in overtime on Tuesday night at Snyder Field.
Â
For the second straight game, the Terriers were able to equalize in the late stages, but this time they were unable to net the game winner in regulation and the Spartans scored in the third minute of overtime to claim the victory.
Â
The loss snaps the Terriers three game winning streak, their second such streak of the season.
Â
The teams played a relatively even first half, with both defenses allowing few good scoring opportunities. UNCG outshot Wofford, 8-4, in the first half, but the Terriers and Spartans were even, earning six corner kicks each.
Â
In the second half, the Spartans were able to get on the board first, as an attempted cross was deflected into the net by a Wofford defender.
Â
Remarkably, the Terriers fought back again. This time, it was senior forward
Matthew Aurednik, who fired the equalizer into the back of the net from about sixteen yards off a feed from
Andreas Suri to tie the score in the 79
th minute.
Â
Both sides defended well for the remainder of regulation, and the Terriers headed to their third overtime game of the season.
Â
It did not take UNCG long to strike, as Leeroy Maguraushe stretched the Terrier defense and slipped a pass to Matt Mattis, who broke away from the back line and found the back of the net to give the Spartans the overtime victory. It was Mattis's first goal of the season.
Â
In the loss, Aurednik added his team leading fifth goal, while goalkeeper
Joe Wichmann tallied a season high eight saves.
Â
Overall, the Terriers were outshot, 15-11, while they allowed 11 corners and earned nine themselves.
Â
Up next, Wofford will travel to Johnson City, Tenn. this Saturday, Oct. 15, to take on ETSU at 7 p.m. When the two teams met at Snyder Field on Oct. 4, the Terriers came out on top, 1-0.
