Men's Soccer Falls to ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The Wofford men's soccer team fell to ETSU, 2-1, on Saturday night in Johnson City, Tenn.

After the Terriers jumped out to an early lead thanks to an own goal, ETSU responded with an equalizer just before the half. Then, in the final period, the Bucs were able to get the game winner and withstood a furious Wofford charge in the final minutes to earn the win.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the 15th minute, courtesy of an own goal by the Buccaneers. After Kevin Davidsson earned a free kick from about 35 yards, his kick deflected off the head of an ETSU defender and into the bottom left corner of the net. It was the first time this season that Wofford has scored off an own goal.

However, the Bucs began to take control of possession in the later stages of the first half. They finally broke through in the 40th minute, when Joao Ramalho sent a perfectly placed cross that was headed in by Fletcher Ekern, who scored his team leading fifth goal of the season.

After each team created a few good opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half, the Bucs capitalized first. Joao Ramalho received a cross and struck from 15 yards out to put ETSU in the lead midway through the second period.

The Terriers best chance to equalize came with three minutes remaining. Matthew Aurednik received a cross from Sam Ross and delivered a well struck shot, but it hit the crossbar and was cleared out of harm's way. In the final two minutes, Aurednik was able to get off a few more shot attempts, but one sailed wide and the other went just high on a collision with ETSU goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland.

Offensively, Aurednik led the team with seven shot attempts in 52 minutes, while Chris Womeldorph added two.

Goalkeeper Joe Wichmann delivered four saves in the loss.

As a team, Wofford outshot ETSU, 17-12.

Up next, the Terriers will return home to host Mercer next Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
