Men’s Soccer Falls 3-1 To Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's soccer team was defeated 3-1 by Mercer on Tuesday night at Snyder Field. The Terriers tied the score on Matthew Aurednik's sixth goal of the season early in the second half, but the Bears netted two unanswered goals in the middle stages of the final period to earn the victory.

Wofford falls to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Conference, while Mercer moves to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in league play. The Bears won both meetings against the Terriers this season.

The Bears got on the board first with a goal by Conner Antley at the 6:43 mark. He put the ball into the left corner of the net off an assist from Roberto Arteaga.

With just under five minutes remaining in the first half, Wofford had a pair of chances as Sam Ross had a shot saved and then Lucas Altman had a header saved by Jeremy Booth. In the first half, Mercer had a 6-4 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Terriers equalized in the 56th minute, as Sam Ross found Lucas Altman in the box, who fed Matt Aurednik with a pass that he one-timed past Booth to tie the game.

However, Mercer jumped back in front six minutes later. After Will Bagrou received a pass in the middle of the field, he settled the ball and unleashed a shot from just over 20 yards that found the top right corner of the net.

Then, in the 74th minute, Mercer's Jake Mezei added an insurance goal on a shot from just inside the box to give the Bears a 3-1 lead that held the rest of the game.

For the second straight game, Aurednik led the team, with three shot attempts. Altman added two of his own, with both coming in the first half.

The Terriers will face UNCG on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Greensboro and then play at VMI on October 25 before returning home on Saturday, October 29 for the final regular season home game against Furman.
