SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team fell to Winthrop, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.
Although the Terriers outshot the Eagles, 10-7, they were unable to come up with a goal in regulation and eventually conceded in the ninth minute of the first overtime period.
Wofford's best chance for the game came early on, when
Matthew Aurednik's shot deflected off the right post to keep the game scoreless. For Aurednik, his next goal will put him into first place alone in the program's Division I history, which dates back to 1995.Â
The rest of the first half was a defensive battle, as Winthrop attempted only one shot for the period, compared to the Terriers' four.
After the break, Wofford was more aggressive, attempting six shots. Unfortunately, none of them found the back of the net, as the Eagles defended soundly and sent the game into overtime.
With just one minute left in the first overtime, Winthrop's Rasmus Arousell slipped behind the defense and delivered a perfect cross to Francesco Tiozzo, who netted the header to win the game and claim the championship in the SoCon/Big South Challenge.
Up next, Wofford will travel to Pittsburgh to play Duquesne at 8 P.M. on Friday, Sept. 9, before taking on Bucknell at 11:00 A.M. on Sept. 11.
After the conclusion of the tournament, twelve players were selected to the all-tournament team.
