SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team dropped a road contest at South Carolina State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Despite striking first, the Terriers surrendered two South Carolina St. goals in the closing minutes of the first half. From there, the Bulldogs held onto the lead in the second half to win the game, 2-1.
For Wofford,
Katie Beuerlein delivered an outstanding performance, scoring her team leading second goal of the season in the 24
th minute. Beuerlein also led all players with four shot attempts and three shots on goal.
However, after Beuerlein's 24
th minute goal, the Bulldogs responded, as Jacquelin Beristain subbed into the game and tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick in the 37
th minute. Then, just three seconds before the end of the first half, she scored again to put South Carolina State ahead at the half.
Even with the loss, Wofford tallied a season high 17 shot attempts for the game, including ten in the first half. Starting in goal for the first time this season,
Mayson Liner delivered five saves on the afternoon.
Offensively, the Terriers'
Brianna LaFontant and
Hannah Washko aided Beuerlein, recording three shot attempts each.
Up next, Wofford will return home to take on Presbyterian on Friday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m.
