Volleyball Wins Home Opener Against PC

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team won in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-20) in their home opener against Presbyterian on Tuesday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The win improves the Terriers to 3-4 on the season, while the Blue Hose drop to 2-5.

The first set was even for most of the way, as the score was tied 11 times and neither side stretched a lead beyond two points. Then, with the score tied at 18, the Terriers went on a 7-3 run to win the set, 25-21. Junior Alex Holland registered two kills in the final six points of the set.

Wofford built on the momentum they established at the end of the first set by delivering a dominant second set, in which they jumped out to an 11-4 lead and did not look back, eventually winning, 25-17. Freshman Catie Cronister tallied five kills in the set to lead the Terriers.

In the third set, Wofford again made a late surge to finish off the game in three sets. With the score tied at 15, sophomore Colleen Reilly provided two straight kills to start a 6-0 run and put the game away.

For the Terriers, the trio of Cronister, Reilly, and Holland combined to register 28 of the team's 39 kills for the game, as Cronister tallied a team high 13, while Reilly and Holland each recorded eight.

For Cronister, her 13 kills marks the fifth time in seven career matches that she has reached at least 10 kills.

Sophomore Bijonae Jones led the team in digs for the third time this season, recording nine on Tuesday night.

Up next, Wofford will travel to Elon for the Phoenix Classic for three games over the weekend. First, on Friday, September 9, the Terriers will take on Elon at 7 p.m., followed by two matches on Saturday, where they face Norfolk State at 9 a.m. and, finally, Delaware State at 4:30 p.m. to close out the tournament.
