Terriers Roll Past Montreat

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Montreat, 71-30, on Monday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers continued their recent run of strong defensive performances by holding the Cavaliers to just 17.5% shooting (10-57) from the field. The team allowed just 20 points over the final three quarters and held Montreat under 10 points in every quarter except the first. Wofford's 30 points allowed are the first time they have held an opponent to under 40 points since a 60-37 win over N.C. Central on Dec. 15, 2015.

All six Terriers that appeared in the game reached at least nine points, with five out of six notching double figures in scoring. Kelsey Lambdin and Grayson Pinholster each finished with double-doubles, while Chloe Wanink and Jamie Grob were one rebound short.

Lambdin recorded her second of the year, tallying 10 points and 12 rebounds, which were a career high. Pinholster scored in the final minutes to notch her fourth of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Wanink scored 18 points to lead the team. She also added nine rebounds, the fifth time this season she has tallied at least nine boards in a game.

"I just try to run in there every time," Wanink said. "Sometimes people don't expect me to go in there because of my height and size. The post players help with pushing out the bigger guards, so I think it leaves some open areas for me to crash."

Appearing in just the second game of her collegiate career, Grob settled in with 13 points and nine rebounds, including a 3 of 4 showing from the free throw line. The freshman from Cincinnati played a career high 30 minutes.

"It was great to get Jamie those minutes," Garrity said. "We're going to need her down the stretch. She did a great job of being physical on the block. She also did a good job of attacking when she got it at the high post. We're really happy for her."

After the Cavaliers kept the game within striking distance in the first, the Terriers raced out to a 13-0 run to begin the second quarter. They held Montreat scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes of the period to gain significant separation going into halftime.

Wofford continued to hold the Cavaliers offense in check in the second, as they held them to just five made field goals and 14 points in the final 20 minutes.

The Terriers never trailed in the game and their largest lead was 42 points. The Terriers owned the paint, outscoring the Cavaliers, 38-16, inside. The team won the rebounding battle, 51-35, and converted 11 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points. Once again, the Terriers held a positive assist to turnover ratio, as they dished out 17 assists and only committed 10 turnovers.

The 41 point margin of victory is the second win of the season of over 40 points for the team. They defeated Erskine by 42 points, 116-74, on Nov. 17.

Up next, the Terriers will take to the road for a two game swing, as they take on Samford this Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m., before battling Mercer on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
