Volleyball Sweeps Samford Friday Night

Terriers Record First Conference Sweep Since Sept. 27

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team swept the Samford Bulldogs 3-0 on Friday night in front of a nice crowd on homecoming weekend at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. With the win, Wofford improves to 16-8 on the season and 6-4 in Southern Conference play, while Samford falls to 9-14 overall and 4-5 in conference action. The sweep was Wofford's third conference sweep of the season but first since downing The Citadel at home on Sept. 27.

Wofford won 25-16, 27-25, and 25-22 to sweep the match and even the series with the Bulldogs this season. The Terriers hit .272 in the match, the team's highest hitting percentage in seven matches dating back to the sweep of The Citadel. Wofford also outblocked the Bulldogs 6-3 to win the battle at the net.

"It's great to get back playing better volleyball after Wednesday's tough loss," said head coach Lynze Roos. "We challenged our team to be more disciplined and improve our ball control. We also focused on our serving, so I'm pleased that we came out and performed strongly in all of those areas. I was pleased with the way our middles attacked. If we continue to get good production out of them, we will be hard to stop."

Catie Cronister and Colleen Reilly both finished with 13 kills to lead Wofford. Cronister hit .250 in the match and added six digs from the back row. Reilly hit. 500 to lead all players and had just two errors on 22 swings. She also recorded a match high four blocks.

Lorissa King dished out 37 assists and added six digs and two blocks to have a nice night.  Taylor Gill and Bijonae Jones led Wofford with 10 digs to anchor the back line and Madeline Savage added seven.

In the opening set, Wofford never trailed. The Terriers jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead and Samford used an early timeout. The Bulldogs pulled within two at 9-7 but Wofford continued to dominate, leading by as many as eight, and ultimately winning by nine, 25-16.

Set two was much more closely contested. The teams traded points to begin, but Wofford began to pull away and Samford took a timeout with the Terriers leading 11-8. The Bulldogs fought back and the match remained tight. Tied 23-23, a Wofford an attack error gave the Bulldogs set point and Wofford took a timeout to regroup. A bad set by Samford tied the match at 24. Samford won the next point and had second point for the second time, but Wofford won the next three points thanks to kills by Cronister, Jones, and Kelly Bossert and won the set to take a 2-0 lead.

Set three, much like the first, was all Terriers. Wofford, again, never trailed, and led handily the whole set, as the Bulldogs late rally was too late.

The Terriers return to the court Saturday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. against Mercer. The match is the final home match of the season for Wofford and will serve as senior day for Sutton Alexander, Danni Densford and Bella Santoro.
