Men's Soccer Wins 6-0 over VMI

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team won 6-0 over VMI on Saturday evening at Snyder Field. The Terriers opened the scoring in the 16th minute and scored five insurance goals to secure the win. The win moves Wofford to 2-10 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference.

"We were terrific in every aspect of our game plan tonight," Head Coach Ralph Polson said. "We came out and played a 90 minute game in which we controlled the possession and scored like we know we can. It is also good when we can reward our reserve players for their efforts in practice by getting them some minutes towards the end of the match. Overall we are satisfied with the result and we will try to take this momentum into Tuesday evening's match."

The Terriers opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Christian Womeldorph linked up with Lucas Altman who beat the Keydet keeper. Just over three minutes later Wofford struck again when Zach Aversano linked up with Austin Tuggle to increase the lead to two. The Terriers scored again in the 30th minute when Austin Tuggle hooked up with Kristinn Sigurjonsson to end the first half scoring.

It was more of the same in the second half as Wofford dominated the match. In the 58th minute Chris Welsh nearly scored on a set piece from 35 yards out but his shot rang the post and Ben Nickol cleaned up the rebound to increase the lead to 4-0.

Wofford added another tally in the 72nd minute when Daniel Mayorga cleaned up a rebound off of the shot from Ben Nickol making the score 5-0. The Terriers completed the scoring in the 82nd minute when Peyton Smith streaked down the right sideline and linked up with Jackson Karolczyk to make the score 6-0.

In the win, Wofford totaled a season high 30 shots. Lucas Altman picked up his third goal of the season and has now scored in three straight matches for the first time in his career. Austin Tuggle and Ben Nickol both tallied their second goal of the season while both were able to record an assist. Kristinn Sigurjonsson, Daniel Mayorga and Jackson Karolczyk all tallied their first goal of the season. Christian Womeldorph, Chris Welsh and Peyton Smith also recorded their first assist of the season. Hunter Wages made one save en route to his first clean sheet and second straight win.

Wofford returns to the pitch on Tuesday when the Terriers travel to Furman to face off against the Paladins at 7 PM in the third annual Quinn Game that will support Down Syndrome Awareness.
