Volleyball Upsets ETSU with 3-0 Road Sweep

Terriers Conclude Regular Season at 20-10

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball spoiled ETSU's senior day with a 3-0 sweep on the road Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale. Wofford, who ended the regular with five straight road matches, went 3-2 in those final five matches and won two in a less than 24 hour span after downing Chattanooga 3-1 on Friday night.

"This was a great match to finish our regular season on," said head coach Lynze Roos. "ETSU is an outstanding, balanced team. We really had to pressure them serving and had to play disciplined defense. I'm very proud of the team for answering that call."

Wofford won the three sets 25-21- 25-16, and 25-23, respectively. The win was Wofford's first against the Bucs since a 3-1 road win on Oct. 17, 2015. The Terriers hadn't swept the Bucs since Oct. 27, 2000 and hadn't recorded a sweep in Johnson City since Sept. 26, 1998. Wofford concludes the regular season 10-3 in three set matches, including 4-1 in three set conference matches.

With the win, Wofford moves to 20-10 on the season and continues to add to the program's Division I wins record set by the team Friday night. The Terriers improve to 10-6 in Southern Conference play, besting last year's conference win total (9) and setting a new program record for conference wins in a season.

ETU, who entered the match No. 2 in the conference at 12-3, falls to 16-11 on the year and 12-4 in conference play.

Catie Cronister led all players with 19 kills in the match. Cronister has double-digit kills in 27 of Wofford's 30 matches this season and nine in a row. The last match she was held to single digits was Oct. 13 when ETSU visited Spartanburg.

"Catie really put together a great match at the net," noted Roos. "She delivered some key attacks and blocks for us."

Taylor Gill set Wofford's record for digs in a three set match with 30, breaking the record of 27 she tied earlier this season. Lorissa King averaged well over 10 assists per set, finishing with 38 in the match.

"Taylor stepped up with her best defensive performance of the season," said Roos. "Our offense was again getting good looks from Lorissa and we were able to find scoring opportunities."

Colleen Reilly finished with nine kills and hit .227 with four block assists. Kara Shacklette recorded six kills with just one error and hit .500 in the match. Shacklette had 18 kills and just one error in the last two matches. Riley Coonan pitched in with three kills as the Wofford middle's (Reilly, Shacklette, and Coonan) recorded 18 kills to just seven errors.

Madeline Savage added nine digs and had a strong performance from the back row.

"Madeline was very solid on serve receive, which really made our offense click," added Roos.

Wofford hit .245 in the match and held ETSU, the top hitting team in the conference by percentage (.225), to just .101. ETSU also entered the match holding opposing teams to the lowest hitting percentage in the conference, .173. The Terriers hit .256, .194 and .278 in the three sets while the Bucs hit just .136, .048 and .116 in their three sets, respectively.

Another major difference in the match came at the net. In the earlier meeting this season, a 3-1 ETSU win, the Bucs racked up 14 blocks, the most by a Wofford opponent this season. ETSU leads the conference in blocks, averaging 2.48 per set, but finished with only four in today's match. Wofford recorded seven blocks, led by Reilly with four block assists and Cronister and Shacklette with three.

Wofford will be the No. 4 seed in the SoCon Tournament. Furman is locked in to the one seed, as are No. 2 ETSU and No. 3 UNCG. The Terriers will play No. 5 Samford on Friday, Nov. 17 at noon in Cullowhee, N.C., this year's tournament site. Last season, the No. 5 Terriers fell 3-0 to No. 4 Samford in the conference tournament. THe Bulldogs went on to win the championship in Birmingham. This season, the team's split the matchups as Samford won 3-1 in Birmingham on Sept. 23 but Wofford got even with a sweep at home on Oct. 20.

"To finish the regular season with 20 wins is a tremendous accomplishment," said Roos. "I feel like we are playing some of our best volleyball right now, so it is a good feeling to go into post season with that confidence."
