SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College football team had a 34-yard field goal in the second overtime against Chattanooga for a 24-21 win at Gibbs Stadium. The Mocs tied the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 16 seconds left in regulation. Wofford scored first to open overtime and Chattanooga matched the touchdown. Luke Carter then hit a field goal for the victory.

Wofford, ranked eighth in the nation, opens the season 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga is 2-8 on the season and 2-5 in the league. The Terriers were led by
Andre Stoddard with 24 carries for 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Brandon Goodson had 41 rushing yards and was 5-of-7 passing for 45 yards. The Mocs were led by Cole Copeland, who was 27-of-39 passing with two touchdowns. Darrell Bridges added 80 yards on 22 carries.

"It is hard for me to explain," said head coach
Mike Ayers. "There are moments of greatness and then moments of not so great and average. It comes down to the fact that we just keep finding a way. It is hard for everybody and I appreciated everyone that came to the game and hung in there with us. It is difficult and I don't know anyone that has gone through and still been able to be successful. We had a couple of guys that weren't able to go today so guys had to step up and that is what happened. I am proud of our guys and proud of the way they hung in there."

The Mocs had the ball to open the game and had five first downs on a 14-play drive that ended with a 20-yard field goal by Victor Ulmo. Chattanooga had a 3-0 lead with 6:45 on the clock in the first quarter. The Terriers went three-and-out and punted on their first drive. The Mocs then went three-and-out and punted with Wofford taking over at the 35-yard line. After a first down, the Terriers punted. On the first play for the Mocs, a fumble was forced and recovered by
Devin Watson, with Wofford taking over at the 20-yard line. A 14-yard touchdown run by
Lennox McAfee gave Wofford a 7-3 lead with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.

With the ball back, the Mocs had two first downs before facing a fourth-and-two. A pass picked up the first down, but the drive stalled and ended with a 28-yard field goal for a 7-6 score with 5:56 on the clock in the second quarter. Wofford went three-and-out and punted, while the Mocs followed with a three-and-out of their own. After a first down, the Terriers had a 54-yard completion to
Blake Morgan called back by penalty. A punt gave the Mocs the ball with 18 seconds left, but they took a knee to end the first half.

Lennox McAfee added a first down before a fourth-and-six pass attempt failed. The Mocs took over at the 27-yard line with 4:43 in the third quarter. Chattanooga had a 23-yard pass play and a 17-yard run to move to the 25-yard line. A sack brought up fourth-and-long, but the pass reception was short and Wofford took over on downs at the 21-yard line. The Terriers went three-and-out and the rugby punt was partially blocked, giving the Mocs the ball at the 43-yard line. They gained two first downs to move inside the 20-yard line with a minute left. A first down run on a quarterback scramble gave the Mocs a first-and-goal from the six. A touchdown pass to Bingo Morton with 16 seconds left made it 14-12. The two point conversion was good, tying the game at 14. Wofford took a knee after the kickoff and the teams headed to overtime.

The Mocs won the toss and the Terriers started on offense. After two first downs,
Andre Stoddard scored from two-yards out and the point after was good for a 21-14 lead. The Mocs had a first down and then scored on an eleven yard reception by Alphonso Stewart. The point after was good to tie the game at 21. Chattanooga took over on offense and on the first play
Devin Watson intercepted a pass and he almost returned it for a touchdown. With the ball back on the 25, Wofford gained nine yards and
Luke Carter lined up for a 34-yard field goal. After a Mocs' timeout to ice Carter, his attempt was good to win the game 24-21.

Wofford had a season-low 233 total yards, with 188 rushing. Chattanooga had 300 total yards, 201 of which were passing. Wofford had 13 first downs to 18 for Chattanooga. Wofford was 8-of-16 on third downs and 1-of-2 on fourth down. Chattanooga was 7-of-16 on third down and 2-of-3 on fourth down. Both teams were called for five penalties. Chattanooga had a 34:28 to 25:32 time of possession advantage.
