Women's Basketball Falls To UNCW

 
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 65-60 in a close contest against UNC Wilmington on Saturday evening at Richardson Indoor Stadium.  The Terriers are now 5-5 on the season, while the Seahawks improve to 6-4.
 
Wofford opened the first quarter on an 8-3 run. The Terriers stretched the lead to as many as eight with just over 45 seconds to play in the quarter but UNCW ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to cut the Wofford lead to four. Da'Ja Green led the Terriers with six points in the first quarter while the Terriers shot 6-16 (37.5%) from the field. Wofford played solid defense to start the quarter, holding the Seahawks to just three points for 6 minutes in the opening period.
 
Despite Wofford shooting 8-14 (57.1%) from the field in the second quarter, the Seahawks outscored the Terriers 21-19 to send the game into the half Wofford 33 – UNCW 31. Da'Ja Green paced the Terriers in the first half scoring 12 points and grabbing four boards while Kelsey Lambdin added seven points and three rebounds. Wofford turned the ball over 11 times in the half while only tallying 5 assists.
 
It was a defensive battle in the third quarter in which the teams only combined for 30 points. Wofford struggled from the field only shooting 5-17 (29.4%) from the field while being outrebounded by the Seahawks 25-19. UNCW was efficient from the field, shooting 7-12 (58.3%) from the field and adding a triple. The third period ended with the score tied, 47-47.
 
Wofford began the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run giving the Terriers a 51-47 lead but two straight baskets from Wilmington's Chinyere Bell put the Seahawks ahead 52-51 with just under six minutes to play. Emily Ryan hit a pair of three pointers for a 57-52 lead with 4:21 remaining. The Seahawks regained the advantage with a 7-0 run that was ended by a three-pointer from Da'Ja Green with 1:45 on the clock for a 60-59 Terrier lead. The Seahawks closed the game by scoring the final six points,which included 4-of-4 from the free throw line to earn the victory.
 
Despite the loss, Da'Ja Green totaled 22 points and ten rebounds, recording her first double-double of her career. Cairo Booker added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists.
 
Wofford returns to the court on Monday when the Terriers travel to Charleston for a matchup with College of Charleston. The Terriers will remain on the road for a Wednesday contest with Coastal Carolina before breaking for the holidays. Wofford returns home for a December 30 meeting with Charleston Southern and then hosts North Florida on January 1.
