Terriers Stumble at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell to UNCG, 67-61, on Wednesday night at Fleming Gymnasium in Greensboro.

The Spartans used a 7-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to grab the lead and never look back. The Terriers cut the lead to one possession several times in the quarter, but UNCG held on for the victory to earn a series split on the season.

Despite the loss, Chloe Wanink had a solid game for Wofford, leading the team with 20 points, while also grabbing six rebounds. Grayson Pinholster matched her season high, which was set in the last meeting vs. UNCG. The senior forward tallied 17 points and six rebounds.

Cairo Booker played a career high 24 minutes off the bench, scoring a career best 10 points and five free throws made.

The Terriers took a 16-9 lead after one quarter largely due to its defense. They held the Spartans to just 40% shooting and also forced nine turnovers, while committing just three on the offensive end against UNCG's full court press.

After building a 20-11 lead early in the second quarter, the Spartans responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to just two midway through the period.  The Terriers offense continued to struggle, as UNCG was able to grab a one point lead at halftime.  Despite committing just five turnovers, Wofford was held to just 28% shooting in the opening 20 minutes. On defense, the Terriers forced 10 turnovers and held the Spartans to just 38% shooting.

The Terriers offense responded with a 17 point third quarter. The team made five of its last six field goals to take a 40-37 lead into the fourth. Wanink hit two threes in the third to reach 15 points after three.

Wofford led 42-40 early in the fourth, but the Spartans answered with a quick 7-0 run to jump back in front. That lead held the rest of the way, as the Spartans took care of the ball down the stretch.

After UNCG turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter, they only turned it over four times the rest of the game. The Spartans also won the rebounding battle, 41-32. The Terriers once again had a positive assist turnover ratio, despite UNCG's full court press. The team tallied 14 assists to just 13 turnovers.

Up next, the Terriers will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina this Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.
