SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's basketball team fell to Samford, 55-48, on Senior Day at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
The game was the team's final game at the BenJo, as they will move into the brand new Richardson Indoor Stadium for the 2017-18 season.
Â
Despite trailing for most of the game, the Terriers took a 42-40 lead with three and a half minutes to go in the game after
Kelsey Lambdin knocked down a three pointer and was fouled. However, after Lambdin converted the free throw, Samford's Hannah Nichols hit three pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Bulldogs a lead they did not relinquish.
Â
Chloe Wanink led the Terriers in scoring once again, as she tallied 15 points and six rebounds.
Grayson Pinholster also reached double figures, scoring 10 points to go with a team high seven rebounds. She also made her first three pointer of the season in the final home game of her career. Lambdin added 10 points and six rebounds.
Â
In the first quarter, neither team separated, as both teams were sound defensively. The Bulldogs' Ellen Riggins scored seven of the team's 11 points in the quarter and helped the team to a two point lead after the first 10 minutes.
Â
The second quarter mirrored the first, with neither team able to generate much offense. Samford took a 23-20 lead into halftime and never led by more than four points in the second quarter. Wofford guard
Cairo Booker led the team with four points in the period.
Â
The Terriers were able to keep themselves within striking distance in the third, as Wanink made 3-of-4 field goal attempts in the quarter. Wofford earned six free throw attempts, converting four of them.
Â
With a four point deficit heading into the fourth, the Terriers picked up their defensive intensity and held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first 5:54 of the period. Samford finally scored to take a 42-40 lead on Lydia McGee's layup with 4:06 remaining in the final period. On Wofford's next possession, Lambdin's three pointer plus the foul with the shot clock running down gave the Terriers their first lead since the first quarter. Unfortunately, once Nichols answered with a three of her own on the next Samford possession, the Bulldogs seized the momentum and never trailed the rest of the game.
Â
With under a minute to go, Wanink's three pointer to cut the Samford lead to three points served as the team's final field goal in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
The loss drops the Terriers to 12-15 overall and 2-10 in SoCon play.
