Baseball Downs Georgetown 18-11

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team got the bats going on the way to an 18-11 win over Georgetown at Russell C. King Field. The two teams combined for 35 hits on the day, with the Terriers hitting four home runs, three doubles and a triple. The Terriers scored six runs in the fifth inning and five in the seventh to earn the victory.
 
Wofford and Georgetown are both 2-4 on the season. The Terriers were led by Mack Nathanson with two home runs and a double, while Brett Hash added a home run and had a total of four RBIs. The Hoyas were led by Michael Derenzi with three hits, including a grand slam, and six RBIs.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the first inning. The Hoyas had a pair of singles in the top of the second inning, but both runners were stranded. Carson Waln reached first on a strikeout-wild pitch to open the bottom of the second inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Alex Malsch then launched a ball over the fence in left center for a 2-0 lead. For Malsch, it was his first career home run. Mack Nathanson followed with a solo home run to center field for a 3-0 score. It was his first hit of the season and tenth career home run. Ty Reginelli added a single and Kody Ruedisili walked. Reed Massey beat out a throw to first for a single that scored Reginelli to make it 4-0 at the end of two innings.
 
The Hoyas had a single in the top of the third, but the runner was picked off. Wofford was retired in order to end the third inning. After a lead-off single in the top of the fourth, Jake Kuzbel hit a home run to left center to cut the lead to 4-2. Two more Georgetown runners reached on walks before a strikeout ended the top half. Mack Nathanson doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a single with two outs by Kody Ruedisili. Reed Massey added a single and after a double steal Brett Hash reached on an error that scored Ruedisili for a 6-2 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth with two outs, the Hoyas hit back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 6-3. Max McDougald led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. With two outs, Mack Nathanson hit a home run out to left center for an 8-3 lead. It marked his first career two-home run game. After a Ty Reginelli walk, Kody Ruedisili drove him in with a triple down the right line. A single through the left side by Reed Massey scored Ruedisili to give the Terriers a 10-3 advantage. Brett Hash then hit a bomb that cleared the trees in left field for a 12-3 lead.
 
Georgetown had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the sixth when Michael Derenzi hit a grand slam to left center to make it a 12-7 game. One Hoya was left on base to end the top half. Wofford got things rolling again in the bottom of the seventh. Kody Ruedisili drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Brett Hash plated a run on a sacrifice bunt. Reed Massey stole home on a double steal with runners at first and third for a 15-7 score. Max McDougald and Cody Miller added RBI singles for a 17-7 lead.
 
A lead-off double and a one out single added a run for the Hoyas in the top of the eighth. A sacrifice fly plated a run to make it 17-9 in the middle of the eighth inning. Ty Reginelli walked with one out in the bottom of the eighth and an RBI single by Reed Massey added a run for an 18-9 score. In the top of the ninth, Beau Hall hit a solo home run with one out and with two outs a single by Michael Derenzi drove in a run for the 18-11 final score.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Spencer Kulman (2-0) went 5.2 innings and allowed seven runs on ten hits and had five strikeouts. David Ehmen had one strikeout and one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Merritt Huber went an inning with two runs scored on three hits and a strikeout. Reece Maniscalco added two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed. Jordan Accetta pitched the ninth inning and gave up two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
 
Jack Cushing (0-2) started for the Hoyas and went 4.2 innings with nine runs allowed on nine hits and four strikeouts. Noah Abdalla work two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits. Nick Morreale threw 1.2 innings and gave up five runs on four hits with one strikeout. Nick Leonard went the final 1.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
 
The home slate for the Terriers continues on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. against UNC Asheville. Wofford will travel to Clemson on Tuesday afternoon.
