ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell to Mercer, 67-42, in the SoCon Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon in Asheville.
Â
The loss concludes the Terriers 2016-17 season at 13-17.
Â
After the Terriers had the score tied at 11 apiece late in the first quarter, Mercer guard Sydni Means drained a three pointer from well behind the line at the first quarter buzzer to give the Bears a lead they never relinquished. Mercer stretched their lead to double digits by halftime and over 20 points in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Â
Of the Terriers 15 games against conference opponents this season, Mercer held them to their three lowest point totals of any SoCon contest this season.
Â
All-Conference selection
Chloe Wanink had another outstanding game, leading the Terriers with 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Wanink was the only Terrier in double figures, but
Marissa Bayer added seven points off the bench, while
Maria Corella scored six points and made a three pointer.
Â
With her 38 minutes played, Wanink broke the program record for minutes played in a season (1,043). The previous record was held by Liz Miller, who played 1,011 minutes in 2007-08.
Â
After the Terriers were down 6-0 and held scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of action, a barrage of three pointers gave them a 9-8 lead at the first media timeout. Wanink hit her first two attempts, while
Cairo Booker also connected from behind the arc. Â The Bears were held to just 33% from the field in the first quarter and were held scoreless for a long stretch, before Means hit her three pointer at the buzzer to give Mercer a 14-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Â
The Bears started the second quarter with a 9-0 run that saw them increase their lead to double digits. Although the Terriers answered with a 6-0 run, the Bears responded by scoring the next six to build their lead back to stretch their lead to as many as 12 points. In holding the Terriers to 33% from the floor, the Bears were able to take a 10 point lead into the halftime break.
Â
Mercer continued its momentum into the third quarter, as they went on an 11-3 run over the first three minutes of the second half. The Bears ran an efficient offense throughout the period and took a 23 point lead into the fourth quarter.
Â
In the fourth quarter, the Bears kept their lead at a comfortable margin, continuing to play sound defense.
Maria Corella had a solid fourth quarter, making a three and earning a trip to the free throw line. Unfortunately, the Bears continued to control the game and walked away with the victory.
Â
Mercer will play the winner of Samford and ETSU in the semifinals on Friday.
Â
Wofford finishes the 2016-17 campaign with 13 wins, which is the most for the program since they also won 13 in the 2011-12 season.Â
